Help needed with remotes for D3000

March 9th, 2016
Hello there!

I was gifted a Nikon D3000 but have been too shaky to do a whole lot. A friend suggested that a shutter remote would be life altering.

So I went to Nikon and looked up the camera and purchased the recommended remote, the ML-L3. However, despite my best efforts, I could not get the darn thing to work.

I decided to try again and got a RC-201 wired remote that the seller assured me fit all D series. Turns out that's all D series except D3000. I still have it if there is some sort of plugin adapter out there that might work.

This has been about a six month saga now and it is getting a little frustrating. I have learned more about the camera in the process but I am bit overwhelmed by the style options. At this point I no longer have a preference for wired or wireless or side mount or shoe mount.

I would just like to be able to use the camera without blurring every photo with my shaky hands.

Would anyone happen to have experience/model numbers/ or advice on what might work?

Please and thank you! :)

@angiadelle I looked over the Nikon specs for the D3000 and they ONLY list the ML-L3 as the remote. They list a UC-E4 USB cable but that is for a direct computer to DSLR connection which isn't what you're looking for unless you want to remote trigger from a tablet, notebook or desktop. To use the ML-L3 you need to select self timer and set the camera in delayed remote (2 sec) or quick response remote trigger modes.

Go here for a manual - http://cdn-10.nikon-cdn.com/pdf/manuals/kie88335f7869dfuejdl=-cww2/D3000_EN.pdf

See pages 55-57 for getting the camera into the remote modes, and page 167 describes the ML-L3.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for taking the time and the effort @mikegifford

Right. This camera seems to be a one off for Nikon. There are whole forums dedicated to hating on it and not much information on actually getting by with one.

I thought I had followed the manual to a T when I tried the remote originally. Nikon has been sold out of ML-L3s since I got the camera so the remote was purchased elsewhere. I just got it out to try again and noticed a tiny "for" above the word Nikon... Shame on them for preying on idiots like me!

I'm going to print the pages you outlined and order a genuine Nikon remote and see if it is a bit more effective. Thank you for the heads up on the UC-E4! It will be a good back up plan plus it just looks handy for future endeavors.

I'll follow up when the remote gets here.

Thank you so much, again. I really appreciate your time!

I got a cheap one at target that said it works with Nikons for $8. Best $8 spent ever!

@angiadelle As well as setting the camera up for use with the remote, it is important to note that as it is an Infra-red powered remote, the lens on the remote needs to be in direct line-of-sight with the sensor on the camera. As the camera sensor is on the front next to the lens, this means that you need to hold the remote in front of the camera and pointing back towards it. Just pressing the remote while standing behind the camera won't work. Good Luck!

As Richard @vignouse said, there is only one IR receiver on the D3000, it's on the front of the hand grip, just below the shutter. The 5xxx, 7xxx and full frame Nikons have one in the back as well, top left usually, but unfortunately not your D3000. I guess the original intent was for selfies, or group shots...

Angi try as mentioned above, and this website mentions the release mechanism needs to be set for the remote to work - https://au.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100202160056AArJWHy
Go into the Menu, then to the camera icon. Then go to "Release Mode". Then select one of the remote settings.

Or another way to change it without going into the menu is by pressing the button on the bottom left side of your camera, the magnifying glass. Then on the screen, on the right side, there is a release mode setting, underneath the ISO setting. You can select one of the remote settings in there too.

yours still work work the same as the video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4HozrzZPJo

should be identical to this - https://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/11940/~/using-the-ml-l3-remote-control

@angiadelle I forgot to add that my remote is literally a 'chinese copy' - I think I paid 3€ for it, including postage from China, and it works just fine.

Thank you @vignouse @ltodd @frankhymus @mikegifford
