I'm looking at setting up a website as I'm learning photoshop and editing skills and would love to keep a record and dairy of my photos, projects and places /events that i visit ..
Do you have you any suggestions and also would love to see if any other 365'ers have their own websites.
Thank you for taking the time to read and looking forward to your responses.
@bizziebeeme I have my own website http://www.zosimas.com , but honestly not sure if it's worth renewing when the time comes. I suppose if your in it for the money having your own site is a good professional way to go, but as a hobbyist I dunno.... I created it because I was sick of the ads on photobucket and a lot of my friends hate flickr and won't go there so...
it'll be interesting to see responses.
If your goal is for some kind of journal or diary perhaps a blog?
I use the Shutterfly share site.(Have for several years) No cost - can set it the way I want (I do a different page each month) can be shared easily if you want to. You can get an idea of it here
Sounds like you're looking to have a blog (a public online diary where you can post your photos, ideas, thoughts, etc...). I have my own site ( http://jaypoc.photography/ ) but I find I do most of my sharing on Facebook and Instagram. I get more visitors there than I do on my personal site (then again, I don't post as often as I would like). If you're looking for something free just to try it out, wordpress.com, blogger.com, typepad.com are just some that offer free tiers. If you want more flexibility, squarespace.com is excellent. There's so many more choices though as well.
I have a site that started out years ago for photos and has morphed into a blog. It is primarily sewing (most of my readers are quilters, friends, and family) and I throw in some photos here and there. It's just for fun. (My husband tells me my job is to have fun, and so I take my "job" seriously) http://www.suehecker.com/blog
I started a website/blog last year when I did the 100 Happy Days challenge and I posted a photo and a blog entry each day. I'm not really posting at the moment but may do again in the future. I used SiteBuilder because I wanted my own website name, which I needed to pay for. Not prohibitive though http://dibz-zen.com
Like @spanner I use weebly as well - dead easy with drag and drop bits and pieces but the end result is functional without being too "pretty" . @pixiemac is a bit of a whizz when it comes to website building. Perhaps she could give you some advice?
As mentioned above, Wordpress.com is pretty good for this sort of thing. If you'd like to browse an example, Richard Laing (formerly posting as @nzsnapper on here) has a blog which charts his progress: https://nzsnapper.wordpress.com/
You might also want to consider Tumblr. Both WP & Tumblr have lots of different themes so you can customise the look and feel.
@zosimasy Thank you Charles for your reply, nice website. I do post on Flickr too., but was looking for a website as hubby thought it would be nice for to to create 'events' and projects ...And another way for me to show photos :-)
@jaypoc Lovely website, thank you for your reply and all the ideas. I also have Instagram but I do not post on there that much, must try and get into Instragram more but I tend to think of Instagram as only iPhone shots which for me are mainly gigs or food :-)
@dibzgreasley Thank you for sharing a lovely website, I shall take a look at Site builder but probably will go more for a free site or get hubby to build me a template...
@humphreyhippo Thank you for your reply and link, I'll take a look at wordpress, Richard has a lovely website. I'll also take a look at Tumblr but not so sure about the latter as I think I looked at that a number of years ago... but I am a little better with technology now :-)
When I couldn't find a decent homepage several years ago, I set up my own (free) site on Google Sites. They don't place ads on my page like wordpress does, and I can make my posts as private or as public as I like. It isn't as social as Tumblr or Flickr, though.
I will also say that a blog is a good option. Some people are recommending Facebook, but I personally would stay away from that. The terms of service for Facebook mean that they can use your photos however they like without permission. Plus, Facebook photos are not really searchable like a blog would be. When I want to share my work to Facebook I link the post on FB to my blog and get viewers to go to my site/blog. I use blogger for my blog ( jjpixels.blogspot.com )
As for Flickr - love the idea of doing it there and would normally recommend it, but word just got out a few days ago that Yahoo has Flickr (and other parts of its company) up for sale, so I would hold off and see what they are going to do before investing the time and energy right now.
@jeffjones thanks for the info, hadn't heard about the flickr sale yet, but not surprising.... I used to post to a blog but no one on FB ever followed through to the site.... I only upload low res images to FB anyway.
