Tamron 18-200 lens question

July 5th, 2016
Hi all,
I am going on a big trip next month so I wanted a travel lens. I bought the Tamron 18-200 LD XR Di II. I only spent $130 which is great for many reasons ( which I will not go into now.) The lens arrived today and I have played with it briefly. It seems to be particular about actually taking a photo on the wide angle setting (anything under 70 mm actually! ) Does anyone have any experience with Tamrons or this particular issue? I couldn't figure out if it was a focusing issue or a light issue...or maybe something else? Maybe I'm just "new lens" challenged!!!! :( Thanks for any help!

When you say "particular" exactly what do you mean? The shutter won't trip? It won't Auto Focus?

It focuses but won't actually take a picture

Does the camera signal that you have acquired Auto Focus? A little chirp, the round circle in the bottom left of the viewfinder and the focus point lit up? I would say off hand it has more to do with the camera than the lens. Try a couple of things to try to narrow down the problem.

(1) Put the lens into Manual Focus and see if that will allow you to trip the shutter. There should be a switch on the barrel of the lens.
(2) Try in Live View. This uses a different AF method.
(3) Put your camera in AF-C Auto Focus Mode, and then go to the Custom Menu and set the AF-C Release Mode to "release." I think that is setting a1, it is on the D5100.
(4) Clean the lens and camera mount contacts. Use a Q-tip and something like mineral spirits if you don't have any standard lens/sensor cleaning solution.

If you are still having problems, see if you can find another person with a Nikon DX camera, or go to a camera store and ask to mount the lens and try it.

If nothing works, I am quite perplexed, and would certainly send the lens back from whence you obtained it.

Huh...so it will shoot at 18mm in manual. It would also shoot in live mode. I went in and put the shutter release button to AE-L On and now it's snapping away. So weird. I turned that setting off and its still working now. I guess something was just stuck??? Very odd. Now it seems to be picky about focussing but the shutter will release if I find a new focus point. I wonder if its a focus issue with this lens or just how Tamrons work. Having only owned Nikkor lenses I'm a bit baffled. But I do have a Tokina wide angle that works great and I love it. What are your thoughts...should I return it? Thinking maybe I'll take it to Hunts as they sell Tamrons.....

Oh, and thanks for your expertise! :)

Did you clean the mount connections?

Not yet but I will

@dianen Yes, I usually have the shutter option AE-L on. I often use the "acquire focus and reframe" technique (shutter half press, actually "back button focus" on the AE-L/AE-F on my 5100) and I like to lock the exposure as well at this time. And I can't do that on the D5xxx cameras with the only other exposure lock option, the AE-L/AF-L button. Which is fully occupied locking the focus. :( One of the advantages of the 7xxx series or the full frame cameras, more buttons with more choices to put features you use. But it shouldn't affect anything you describe however you go.

Hope you get the lens to work for you reliably.
