Do I want a 6D, 80D, or 7D II???

July 13th, 2016
Help needed please! I have a Canon 600D which has been really fab for me, but I'm at the point where I'm feeling like I "need" an upgrade! Actually a few of the 600D's specs are starting to frustrate me a little, mainly lack of focus points (9) and I find it's not that great in low light as just a couple of examples. So I've been looking at the 7d II and the new 80D and the 6D.

When doing my research the 80D seems to be a great option. In fact in several reviews it comes out better than the 6D and the 7dII (e.g. see here: http://cameradecision.com/compare/Canon-EOS-7D-Mark-II-vs-Canon-EOS-80D). But I do like the idea of going to a FF, however, one of my bugbears about the 600D is the lack of focus points and the 6D only has a few extra than the 600D. However, the 80D has far more AF points but is not a FF. I think I have pretty much ruled out the 7d ii. I'd be keen to hear if anyone has any thoughts on these choices or advice please!!

The two lenses I use most of the time I believe can be used on either FF or crop, so there's no real problem there. 50mm 1.8 and a Tamron 90mm 2.0 Macro. Photography I like most is portrait/family/child photography, macro, animal photography.

Big thanks in advance for any advice!!

hi Hayley...

i'm running off to work, but here are a few quick thoughts for you...

i have a canon 70D (it was an upgrade from a T2i) and i love it... it is a fantastic camera that pretty much does everything i want... the main drawback for me is that it is a bit heavy to lug around, especially when paired with my favourite lens which is also quite heavy... anyway, assuming the 80D is the next level up and weight isn't an issue for you, i expect it would be a great option...

for a FF, i would ask "why" - what do you think a FF will do for you that a crop sensor can't? this is a question others asked me when i was cogitating the replacement to the T2i (which died on me after 3 years of non-stop use)...

i know FF's are "all that", and a grand toy to have, and i expect i'm going to get one one of these days, but... lenses are expensive and my understanding is that the kit ends up being quite heavy.... AND, all indications are that the pros are going to head to the mirrorless world and so i'm king of waiting to see where things go with the mirrorless FF (of which there are already some options available)...

and btw, if you're seriously contemplating the FF, please make sure your lenses will work on it... because as i said, the lenses are $$$$$$$!

anyway - i expect you'll get a fair bit of input and i will watch closely because i'll be interested in what others have to say as well :)

I have been looking at a camera upgrade and am leaning towards the 80D. I like to do a lot of macro and I read that with the FF, you have to get closer to your subject in order for it to fill the frame.

Didnt think the 7dmk11 was full frame. However if you want a camera for fast moving targets then I think you will be hard pressed to beat the 7D mkii.

@padlock 7D MkII is APS-C format as you suggest, not FF

80D all the way. Canon has just introduced a new generation of sensors in the 80D and they are a big step forward compared to the old 18 and 20 MP sensors. The full frame cameras 6D and 5D will probably be upgraded with the new generation FF sensors later this year.

If you only plan to shoot fast action and BIF the 7D mk2 will still be worth considering though

This article is really interesting as I want to upgrade my 700d soon and the 3 you choose are all in the mix. Hope this carries on lol :-)

@northy @helstor @moonmtn @padlock @creampuff @johnston1364 Thanks heaps for your thoughts. I really think I'm leaning towards the 80D. I've just been and had a quick play with one and gosh it was good! So smooth and quiet, not as heavy as I thought it would be, and all those lovely little AF points... what a treat! And after all the reading and all the comparisons I've done it seems to keep coming out on top, so I'd say I can't go far wrong with it!! Exciting :o) Sometimes you just need a little advice and reassurance from other photog enthusiasts - tried talking to my husband about the different models and AF points, low light capabilities and model numbers and I could see him glazing over in confusion... bless him, he did try though! So thank you for your help!

@johnston1364 Interested to hear what you end up going for! Do you have any others in the mix? Or perhaps I shouldn't ask... I may end up confusing myself more!

If you feel limited by the number of focus points, remember the 6D has only 11, all in the center of the frame. Canon is surely going to announce a FF replacement for the 6D, it's sadly showing its age, this year some time, so if you want FF and can wait... Otherwise, the 80D is a sound choice it seems to me if you need to stay with Canon. The 7DII was a good one in its time, but I think it is rather outclassed and showing its vintage too, especially at its price point.

If you are thinking to switch manufacturers, the Sony a6000 is definitely worth looking into for the price. It more than holds its own with most APS-C cameras twice the price. The a6300 upgrade, newer, better, and a smoother performer, would be my choice if I were upgrading my APS-C camera, which I am not, but it's twice the price.

I recently upgraded from a 70D to a 6D - because I wanted FF, better sensor, and didn't want to wait until the new 5DIV and 6DII were announced (much less actually released).

I *love* the 6D. Great image quality (IQ) and even better low-light/high-ISO performance. But I use it primarily for street level & architectural photography in NYC. I kept my 70D for its auto-focus (AF) and action capabilities.

The 80D, however, from what I hear, is a fantastic camera. The IQ might even rival the 6D, and it has better AF than my 6D. If you have a need for FF, be prepared to either wait until the 5DIV & 6DII are released, or buy now and maybe trade up in a year (this fit my needs best - I'll be trading in my 6D, at a loss I know, for a 6DII next year). Otherwise, take the plunge and get the 80D.

Good luck!

I've had my 7DMII for a year and a half. Great for action. Heavy. Best with solid quality glass. Feel free ti see my Bali/Japan photos all taken with that camera. Huge learning curve. Worth it. My next camera will be mirrorless. And for what it's worth, it's the glass, depends on what you shoot. I upgraded from my T2i stiil out performs at times. Hope this helps.

Here is sample action

No all 3 are choices I would have gone for. I haven't been reading up much but my concern with the 80d is that is it enough of a leap to keep my interest going forward. I am concerned about the weight of the 7d ii and deep down I think wait till the 6d mark 2 gets released before deciding as mine isn't soo bad. Well expect rapid fire whilst shooting in RAW.... RAH!!!!!

@johnston1364 the weight on the 7dii is just an issue with travel for me. I use a black rapid strap and it's perfect when walking a good bit.

@frankhymus @cityneighborhoodsnyc1 @darylo @johnston1364 @helstor @northy @padlock @moonmtn A really big thank you to you all. Today I bought the 80D and I love it! Your comments really helped me to clarify my thoughts on what to do and I feel really confident and happy with my choice after pondering it for so long! Here's hoping for dry weather tomorrow so I can get out and about with it ;o)
