Need photo ideas for Oct. in Atlanta

August 14th, 2016
I'm house sitting near Emory University in Atlanta for almost all of Oct. Never been to Atlanta, so I'm looking for advice from locals about where to shoot. I'll have 2 main limitations. I'm limited to public transportation and I can do stairs and hills only in small doses.

Here is a mash of what I do and don't like shooting and appealing ideas I've found on the net. Street no, candid yes. Flash no, ambient light yes. Astro no, Night yes, e.g. Jackson Street bridge and North Avenue bridge. Night skylines, but not Atlanta's unless it's reflected, e.g. Lake Clara Meer. Daytime outdoor events Yes, e.g. Art on the Atlanta Beltline, Elevate: Microcosm and Taste of Atlanta. Nothing requiring a lens longer than 200mm (FF). Mirrorless captures action poorly, but I'd like to try it on kids baseball, e.g. NYO Sports fall league play. Still and moving water yes, e.g. Lullwater Preserve. Boats and markets yes, but where?

Except for my 'no interests', I'd like to hear about your favorite places for what you like to shoot, even if it's just wandering with camera.

Some time at or near The Varsity, on Techwood or North I believe, could find some nice candids. I grew up on the south side, but haven't lived there since the early 80s.

@fotoblah
Check out @DarylO who has photographed a lot of the areas in Atlanta and has wonderful ideas. Maybe Daryl could provide some specifics?

Hi FotoBlah,

First, you'll need to study the MARTA bus and rail system for public transport. If you are very close to Emory, you may be able to utilize some of their shuttles that take you to various other institutions or MARTA stations.

Decatur is a fantastic town near Emory.

You have already mentioned some key spots. The Jackson Street Bridge is best unblocked view of Downtown Atlanta and is great for evening light trails and blue hour or early morning. If you go in the evening, you should go accompanied. Just down the street from the Jackson Street Bridge is the MLK Center.

Downtown:
Centennial Park (fountains are good for shots)
Ga Aquarium
World of Coca-Cola
Center for Human and Civil Rights
(note, you can go up to the top of the Aquarium parking garage there to also get nice views of the city night and day)
Sky View Ferris Wheel
Go to the top of Westin Peachtree Plaza to have 360 views of city.
Varsity is a MUST
All Saints Church on North Ave. (MARTA right there)
The Fox Theatre on Peachtree
The Pencil Building
Flat Iron Building
Oakland Cemetery
Krog Street Tunnell (graffiti)
Also downtown has a circular rail system for $3 unlimited rides to go to many of these spots--hop on and off

Midtown:
High Museum
Atlanta Botanical Gardens (Chihuly is currently on exibit, but don't know when it ends)
Piedmont park may have some sports activities--the park is a great spot too for city views and reflections in lake
Beltline is fabulous
Ponce City Market

Decatur (near Emory) is a great small town and has the campus of Agnes Scott (really lovely)

For historical houses, Ansley Park (adjacent to Piedmont Park), Inman Park, Little Five Points
Another place to visit is the Carter Center near Little Five Points

Stone Mountain will be worth paying some way to get there and maybe MARTA extends there by bus. If walking/climbing is not possible, there is a gondola that goes to the top and you will have fabulous views--it's the largest outcrop of granite in the world.

DeKalb Farmer's Market will be a great place to visit although photography is not allowed inside (will be on a bus line from Emory I believe).

If you do a tag search of Atlanta, you will see some of my photos of the places I mention.

Hope this helps. I will put my email on one of your random photos in the event you would like to contact me personally, and perhaps we can go on a photowalk.

Daryl

@darylo OMG Thank you! That list could keep me busy for a month. I love Chihuly, though I've never seen his work outdoors. AJC.com says it runs through Oct. A photowalk sounds interesting. I deleted the email you posted and will send one so you'll have mine. Again, a big THANK YOU.
