Photographing hologram on car hood

June 2nd, 2017
Hoping I can get some advice from more experienced car photographers in the group. My very talented SIL designs and installs car wraps. She designed one for her Camero which has a holographic image on the hood. She has asked me to take some pictures for a local magazine (payment for the awesome mural she designed for our trailer). Has anyone ever done this before? I'm concerned that the hologram won't show up and do the design justice. Any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated.

I am not a car guy or all that great of a photographer.. I would go with HDR and a natural look. Metal really pops in HDR shots. Also would want to see it in B&W. Would take long exposers of the car. For some fun I would spin the lens making the car look like it is moving. The hologram I would think is going to come out flat. Moving the camera around will give you different looks of the hologram.

Don't know about this particular issue, but in general when I have tricky light, I take several shots at different exposures (like for HDR) with a tripod, and then use Photoshop to mask in the correct exposure for each space (for example...maybe the hologram needs to be underexposed to get a good color saturation?) Best of luck, and let us see what you come up with.

@wildernesswillie @houser934 thank you for the suggestions. I will try both and I also thought light painting might help. Stay tuned 😀
