Lightroom catalogues

I import all my photos to Lightroom. I know they are catalogued but I'm not savvy with that part of Lightroom. I want to move a number of my folders to an external drive. I know that LR then won't know where they are. Is there a best solution here? I only have LR 5 and hopefully can still upgrade to 6. Suggestions from those of you with too many photos to keep in one place?

If you do the movement within Lightroom all should be good. I often move images between drives like this it's basically drag and drop in the LR file structure on the left hand side.

There are lots of videos on You Tube if you search. This was how I learnt to use Lightroom
