India trip. Camera choice??

July 30th, 2018
I’m going on holiday with my daughter to India. Becka has planned the trip very well and are days are fun filled. Some of the Highlights
We will be visiting the Taj Malal. Morning and afternoon jungle excursions
An afternoon at an elephant farm. Jaipur - Amber Fort

I wanted to take my Olympus e-pl8 as it’s small and much lighter
than my canon 7D ii. and with all the activities may be much easier and nicer BUT will I regret my decision.
Olympus with 14mm- 150mm Lens and 70-300mm lens for the jungle excursion
I also have a pancake lens for my Olympus too.
Would really appreciated your advice Thank you

I can't comment on the Olympus but I can say that in my experience, I've enjoyed holidays a lot more since moving to mirrorless and stopping trying to drag an SLR everywhere. It just makes everything from flights to long walks so much less hassle.
If you enjoy shooting with the Olympus and are happy with the image quality, I'd say go for it. It sounds like you have a decent variety of focal lengths with your lenses. My tip would be to make sure you take some sort of table top or mini tripod. I'm currently getting lots of use out of a Miggo Splat which doubles as a bit of camera protection when not in use, but I've used gorilla pods and other variations. They are great if you want to do any night shooting but don't take up much room.

i'd absolutely go with the mirrorless... especially given that you have a good variety of lenses...

@humphreyhippo i'm gonna have to check into that miggo splat thing... i continue to have a hate-hate relationship with my gorilla pod and could really use something smaller and more portable...

Take the camera that you're most likely to want to carry round with you all day and use :) no point in taking the 7D if it's too heavy/ big to easily take with you and end up missing shots

Given that choice I'd definitely go mirrorless, much lighter to carry and you have a good selection of lenses.

Whilst going slightly off topic, could I suggest you also be aware of the possibility of condensation on camera and lens. If one stays in an air conditioned room with air conditioning quite low and then go out into the open, you will find at best that the front of the lens will steam up with condensation. Dependant upon outside temperature and humidity you may also find that the inside of the lens and camera including sensor will also steam up.

One way to avoid this is to put your camera equipment in a sealed bag or box until it reaches the temperature outside..

Weather proof camera/lens should not steam up on the inside, just the outside.

If you are already aware of this problem, my apologies; if not it is something that is worth thinking about.

@northy I now have two! One has three legs and I use it for my a6300 and a smaller 5 legged one for the RX100. I thought it might just be another gimmick but I really like them. Helps if you have the spirit level display on the back of the camera though.
I like how I can wrap it around the camera like a cage when it's in my bag. I think my problem with gorilla pods (besides the fact I kept breaking them), is they always felt awkward trying to fit into a camera bag.

@humphreyhippo thank you so much for the advice and the info about Miggo Splatt just went to Amazon and ordered one 👍😀. So hopefully all ready for our trip in October. Certainly has put my mind at ease about camera choice.

@northy Thank you so for for your reply certainly has put my mind at ease as kept wondering am I making the right choice! And I certainly didn’t want to make such an error on a major once in a lifetime trip.

@blueace Thank you for your reply as I didn’t want to make a wrong choice especially as I own a canon as that has a bigger sensor.

@bizziebeeme Have a great time. :)
Don't forget to take a spare battery or two and if you haven't used the Olympus in ages, put the PDF version of the manual on your phone. ;)
