Lots and LOTS of questions!!!

January 15th, 2011
Hi everyone

Can you plz help me with the following questions

If I see someone photos I would like to go and try take it in a simulare way or the format (Hope I am expressing myself correct now) eg I see a photo of a sunset of the ocean (not that I live there) but can I go and photograph a similare photo and post it? Or of smarties or any colourfull object and do the same? (I know it is like kinda steeling an idea?!)

How do you guys feel about it?

And the second thing is do you guys edit your work? How many of your 365 project pics are edited, colour or any other way?

Thx you all

:-)

Hi :) of course you can use other people's work as inspiration!

I edit here and there. Mostly exposure and saturation.

Hi Nicolene.

I think it's OK to get inspiration from other peoples photos. Just remember that some people might like it if you leave a comment saying you liked their photo so much you are going to try to do the same thing.

I do some basic editing to most of my photos. Mostly I adjust the contrast, clarity and colour saturation. Sometimes I have to remove some noise or do some sharpening as well. How much editing you do, or if you edit at all is really up to you.

I don't think it would be good to copy other people's photos but its fine to use them to get ideas.

I only ever crop, get rid of red eye and sometimes clone out unwanted things but that's all the editing I ever do.

As far as photos of sunsets, flowers etc. go that's not stealing an idea, millions of people take photos like that and don't need to see it anywhere first.
If it's something more specific that not alot of people would do, it would be fine to use the idea and maybe give the person you got the idea from some credit, particularly if it's someone from a site like this.

As far as editing, I started with no clue as to what I was doing, I just took photos and uploaded them. As I've gotten a bit more experience I've done more editing on photos but still leave some SOOC if I like it enough.

Cool thx so much for everyone's reply's. Seeing some of the photos really inspires me to grab my camera and go for it! :-D

I will most deffinatly give credit to people whom I saw it from like the key change with green back ground (Zioe pic)

The photos that I have posted here so far hasnt had any editing to them. I do a bit of editing here and there. I use photoshop for my edit work

Just another question I thought of was:
If I missed a day in a photo of the 365 can I look for a holder photo for that gap day or should I just carry on?
(We were on holiday and I forgot my battery's charger! I know I can kick myself for doing that. The result is I missed a day or so!)

Thx guys

@nickys Do whatever makes you happy :) nobody is going to tell you that you can't use an older shot!

It's your 365, so if you need to use a filler, use it! I am new to this site and personally I've decided to only upload pictures sooc, but that's my choice.

This site is fantastic for inspiration, and I'm sure we've all seen someone's picture and thought "that looks fantastic, I'll have to try that"

I try and mention the originator of an idea if i try something similar where they have had a good conceptual idea. Check http://365project.org/sparkle/365/2010-11-04 for reference.

I edit some stuff, but only to learn how to do it, most of my stuff is SOOC

Take picture of whatever you like. Everything is fair game. If you are staging something that is a replica of someone else's work then it would be appropriate to say so. Personally, I just grab my camera and take pictures without regard to thinking about if someone else had done it or not. That would be too much because probably someone somewhere has taken a similar picture. ACK!!! Too much for my brain. If it's your idea, then run with it. ;-)

I think you can use us as inspiration all you want! I feel like that's part of what this site is about, to use the people as a muse, then to begin to build your confidence in yourself as an artist.
Now if you copy someone's picture exactly, just tag them in it and give them a bit of credit. It's a nice thing to do. I've been on the side where someone got a lot of credit for a picture that they copied from me, and it was hurtful that they never mentioned they got the idea from me...yet they were thanking everyone that told them what a great idea. It sucked. (But I'd say that is only if you copy it exactly.)

As far as editing, some people do SOOC shots (or straight out of camera) because their goal is to create beautiful work in the camera. That's awesome because then you get better technically with your camera, and that is the first step to being a wonderful photographer!!
Then, others have tons of fun using the editing tools and try to create works of art with the use of these tools.
Either way is acceptable and both are considered artistic so whatever your heart desires that specific day, I'd say...go for it!
Welcome to 365!!!! I know you'll love the journey as much as I do!

I started as trying to shoot a photo each day, and haven't really done much post processing...until I saw other folks here doing some wonderful work. I felt so good about it, it made me want to try tings that I hadn't done before, or was too meek to try. ABsolutely you are here to make the project yours, and inspiring photos can help you get there.

Hahah, If no one got ideas from anyone else here, the site would soon dry up.. Watched any Hollywood films lately? Cant tell you the last time I saw an ORIGINAL film. And dont get me started on music....
Its your project and therefore can fill it with any kind of photo you like. and if that means older photos then so be it.

Completely agreed with everyone - inspiration is fine, copying should be credited. I had an idea to do my 365 project on a theme - a rubber duck. I told my mate about it, and she immediately started her own 365 project, doing the EXACT same thing. It's probably quite petty of me but I get slightly ticked off when people comment on hers and say "Ooh what a fun and creative idea, I love it" because although I'm not the first person to do this idea I definitely did tell her about it and that is the reason she is doing it!

So, as someone who has had my work copied, even down to starting a thread in the discussions forum asking for ideas for interesting places to put a duck (about an hour after I asked that question there appeared another thread almost exactly the same posted by her) it can be very very annoying not to have any credit.

I went back and counted to see how many I am editing/processing. Not counting cropping, about 50%. Differently from SOOC folks, one of my goals is to learn how to do that, use the software for digital photo manipulation, so to me it's a good thing.
