How did you get into photography?

And how long ago was that?

If you don't mind my asking, of course. =]

I used to be into writing, and I would use pictures of people and places from Flickr to get some kind of inspiration. Then I decided I wanted to give photography a try. =]

I guess that was three years ago.

I got a camera and started taking more and more photos with it, then I started my 365 and I love it!

@missfreako Both my parents were in to photography at points, so there was piles of kit just lying around.

At some point during school I started to enjoy taking pictures so I did a lot - my computer sits loaded down with around 40GB of photos after being cleaned out. There's also a box of negatives...

I inherited my current camera from my dad, with a few lenses. He sold a few of his old 35mm lenses to buy a DSLR, it's served me with around 8.5K shots, coming up on the big 10K

My grandmother got a free camera for opening up a savings account, when I was 7. It was a cheap Diana 120 Medium format. I was in second grade. I have been a geek ever since.

My friend was doing her own 365 project on Facebook and I loved her photos and the whole idea of the project... so I decided I would try it. I found that taking photographs was really fun and relaxing for me and I loved the challenge of trying to capture a beautiful moment or make something look beautiful in a photograph. I just do it for fun but I love learning new things about it and I love trying out different things. I know I have a long way to go in learning but I am really enjoying the process :) I love seeing everyone's photos here! They are all so inspiring!

Someone I know was using this site and I thought I'd give it a go. I had always admired photography, but never did anything more than snapshots until May.

My grandfather is a photographer/artist and my aunt is a graphic designer...

When I was a kid I use to play with a little 110 film camera. when I turned 16 my mom, aunt, and grandmother got me a canon rebel g. I took 4 rolls of film worth of pics the first week. :) to be honest, I miss flim. With digital cameras and photoshop you can do anything. But I personally don't think of it as photography. My old pics from my 10 year old camera are a lot better then my digital ones.

That wasn't really what you were asking, huh? :D

My wife and I were getting ready to have a baby and I figured it was important to learn some things about it. I got a camera last Christmas and just plowed through books over the next 8 months. We had the baby in August and I haven't stopped taking pictures since.

took the usual stupid shots when I was a teen,, then when I ran away from home as 27 and traveled I bought a really expensive camera and thought well I can still take crappy shots with this camera or learn to use it properly.. so I just started by looking at what the camera saw, instead of the main subject in the view finder and I got some amazing photos back.. and it just went from there..
Still learning !

I just loved taking pictures when I went on fieldtrips people would tell me little tricks like covering your flash with a finger will get you a red glow on the picture, or when shooting a waterfall cover the lense until you get the shot then uncover to prevent water marks on the lense if you don't want them and I got good photos, and it became kind of a hobby for me. Then a friend of mine told me about this site and I have been on here since jan 1st and like it a lot.

Thank you all for sharing!
I think it's really amazing to look at the photos people take, and see the passion people have for photography as a whole. =]

I started when I was a kid with a "126" and then "graduated" to a 110 (probably before your time..LOL)

I got my first 35mm (film) way back around 1988 or 89 and a whole new world of possibilities opened for me. I loved experimenting with my kids (which rubbed off on my daughter who is also on and introduced me to 365) and I even owned a portrait studio for a time. That's where I was introduced to digital around 2001. I sold the business and was without a decent camera till last year and am having a lot of fun with photography of other things than people.

I just love photography. Plain and simple. And always striving to get better.

I got my first camera from my mom, for Christmas when I was only 6. My mom was a single mom at the time, she had almost no money, it was about all I got, and Im sure it wasnt an expensive one, but that started the love. Ive had one continuously since, and no matter what else I was into, I almost always carried one.

My father did a lot of photography and had a dark room. He gave me my first camera for Christmas in 1955. He died 6 months later. I have owned a camera ever since, 126, 110, Nikon and canon SLRs, and finally 3 digital p and s. I have also done painting, drawing and mixed media in the last 25 years. I found when I was working that photography fulfilled my need for creative endeavors when I did not have time for painting. In those days I thought it expensive because of film and developing so as long as I was working I could afford it. When I was laid off I started painting and drawing again. Enter the digital camera, and I have been doing it all ever since.

i've just been always snapping photographs ever since i can remember. i got really serious about it 3 years ago and started trying to learn all i could rather than randomly snapping. i wish i still had my polaroid camera from when i was a child, and that i'd thought to ask my dad for grandpa's old old cameras...

I took a yearbook class in 8th grade because I was taking a 2nd semester contemporary novels class and I needed something to take 1st semester. I loved it so much that I dropped the novels class and took yearbook again my freshman year. I ended up being the editor both years. I didn't take yearbook in high school because I needed to take other classes. I was never a great photographer in Jr. High (ie, I rarely left Auto mode) but I had a basic understanding of composition and such. Then my junior year I signed up to take a trip to France and it dawned on me that I wanted an awesome camera for an awesome trip to an awesome country. But I dropped the idea because I knew photography was expensive and I was about to become a poor college kid. Much to my surprise, my parents bought me a Rebel XS kit for Christmas and I've been soaking up everything photography like a sponge. My goal is to become skilled enough to take amazing photos on my trip this summer. (And maybe to save up enough money for a wide-angle lens and an external flash.)

i used to not be a picture taker until i got a digital camera....and then i got a better p&s was all about the different functions it could do, and then i had to get one that would take good pictures at concerts, and then i started to knit and tried to get really good pictures of my knitting and yarn....and then we moved by a lake, a really pretty lake in the fall...and wanted to take lots of pictures of that
and then when we were planning our wedding, i really got hooked on the idea of photography....i researched so many wedding photographers (and there are a lot) and looked at all their pictures and thought i want to do that...not necessarily wedding photography because i'm nowhere near that, but just take pretty pictures or better pictures than i have been of just about everything....
so i'd say about 2 years ago i got hooked on this idea, and i bought my dslr in april '10, started a 365 then, failed, and started again
i just need to work on being able to take pictures anywhere...not just in/around my home or my family

My husband challenged me to join as a bit of a joke (I hate being in front of the camera) and my first photo is Day 1 of my Project!

I am not so much into 'photography' itself as creating a world that other people can view through the window of a photograph. I love how you can capture just one moment in time and preserve it forever; but then I hate how it is just one moment, when there is so much more that was said, and so much more that happened, to make that moment possible.

I've never had a particularly good camera, but I love looking at other people's photos, especially sunsets, and more especially the sea. Combine the two and you have a winner :P

I have so much to say and no-one to say it to, I suppose I am sort of hoping this project can be an outlet for all my creativity.. without having to moan at anyone too much!

I hate being in front of the camera.. but only because I hate how I look. There are two photos of me on here.. my profile photo, and when I commented on the 'Show Yourself' thread. I doubt there will be any more. If I had the confidence to be in front of the camera I would be there in a second.. but I don't.

Anyhoo.. I ramble far too much on these forums. Someone really should shut me up. But I got into this because my brother, manek43509 has been doing it for ages, and on New Year's Day I suddenly thought it might be fun to try it :)

That's it for now, honestly.

I had a friend reccomend this project and i have really got into it and i am addicted to viewing all the amazing photos on here!

I've always been interested in photography. Always been awed by photographs that catch my eye and its always been my choice of art over anything else. As a kid I had point and shoot basic cameras... film even I always took snapshots. Due to the lack of support though within my family I never pursued it. About 3 years ago I finally brought a decent camera when someone suggested that I find something I enjoyed doing as a child.

I spent two years taking photographs on the same camera I use now in the automatic settings. My partner then suggested that maybe I start looking at it seriously and with his help and the help of a few very good friends I slowly built up confidence to give it a go. I put up a fan site on facebook, which I thought was a little bit cocky of me but hey you never know and like any good artist you have to build a fan base.

Its been up nearly a year since its been up and here I am now doing 365, learning even more and doing my diploma in freelance photography. I am loving this place here and also loving the fact that finally I have found something that I can do that absorbs me in a way nothing else ever has and that I feel passionate about. I do not think I am great by any means and probably never will think that as we are always our own worse critics.

and now I am rambling so hushing lol

I've always liked taking pictures.

I didn't start trying to learn about the more technical aspects (i.e. not using auto) until mid-October, 2010. I started my project on October 30. I still don't have a DSLR, but am really itching for one.
