Comments: Indication of quality or not?

Relatively new to the 365 project. I want to ask long timers a question.

Some people get a lot of comments on their images.

Some get none.

I am not bothered either way for myself, but would like to know if, in general, the quantity of comments is equal to the quality of the image? Or do people find that it is more of an acquaintance issue, comments come from those you comment on, thus building a relationship?

I am genuinely curious as to the process of comment on quality ratio to comment on acquaintance ratio - if you know what I mean :)

I think the more people that you have following you, the more comments you receive. I think you have beautiful photos btw :)

In some ways yes, and in some ways no. People will obviously be more likely to comment if they like a photo (and that means it's probably a good photo). And people will also be more likely to comment on your photos if you comment on theirs. So it's a bit of both. :)

no... there are some great photogs on here that fly below the radar and no one views or comments on them. I can say this give something to the community and the community will give back to you and if you take a photo everyday you will get better...

@icywarm - well said and good advice

For the record I comment on what I like ... if it grabs my eye then I comment :)

Hi Rhu and welcome to 365 :)

Firstly, I find I'm more inclined to view a photo if it's given a title and some sort of caption/description because it helps add interest to the photo or perhaps explain why it was significant to the person and worthy of a photo in the first place.

Some people leave the title of their image as just a file name or whatever their camera named it (eg. DSC_ 298) and for me, it really doesn't shed any light on what their photo is or why they took it or how etc.

Secondly, by commenting on other people's photos they will be more inclined to check out your work too. :)

@staciehighland Thanks, that's kind of you. @pocketmouse Yes, that makes sense. I don't comment as much as I could, but then I wouldn't want to comment just to *get* comments, as that's not why I am here either. Actually, I'd rather critiques than comments, but that's not related to my question (I am waffling). @icywarm I agree with you totally. I have seen some truly awesome shots here. I wonder though how many have had photo editing applied to get to the results. @silverhorn Thanks for the reply, I appreciate that, and @kaost I think that is really awesome advice you have offered there. Thanks all, seems there is a 50 - 50 camp. You all have awesome photos, and thanks for answering me.

@rhubarbwhine I agree with all the above comments. I've been here over a year now and when I first began the comments were all about the photo, both given and received. As time goes by you will come to 'know' certain people and a little more than photographic comments creep into your dialogue! But you will find this community fun, supportive and very interesting. Good luck!

there's no 'either-or' answer here, it's a combination of both.

personally I look at all photos loaded by people I am following but only comment on those I really like. It is a personal preference though so might not be an indicator of quality only my taste!

@rhubarbwhine - for the first half of my time here I used to comment on other people's pictures all the time and therefore also received many comments on my pictures - but life got busy and I couldn't comment as much during the second half of my project, and the comment count dropped away. however, I don't think the quality of my pictures went down at all - it's just a community project, and the more you invest in it, the more you will get back. But I'm ok where I am right - those that enjoy my pictures find me, as I do them.

As to the editing... I find a strong connection... good photos are edited... I don't know why they wouldn't be?!?
February 8th, 2011
No, not hugely... Some of the pictures which I am most proud of, in my project, have been the ones which have had maybe one, or two, comments - perhaps none at all...

It can be a bit weird, uploading something you've spent time on, which you're really pleased with, sitting back and waiting for the plaudits to roll in from people who appreciate what you've done - only to find that they don't!

But you get used to it... :)

I had a comment on my sixth photo before I was following anyone, ir anyone was following me. I have no idea how they even found my picture but it made my day!

I do look at all the pictures of the people I follow but in no way do I comment on all of them, only the ones that catch my eye. That might be because they are great but also because they are funny or because they have a special story attached to them. So then my comment might not be related to quality at all.

@manek43509 It is impossible to predict which pictures people will respond to. 2 days ago I debated whether a particular picture was worth posting or not and it is my 2nd top rated photo now. Probably because it was funny rather than it was good quality.

I agree with @icywarm and @kaost and pretty much everybody else.. if you comment on other people's photos then they will look at your work.. but.. even if you have 1000 followers, if you take a really terrible photo then none of them are going to want to comment on it. (unlikely, your photos are really good :D ) So I think that comments can be an indication of quality.. the better the photo, the more people are going to want to tell you about it. But people aren't going to look unless you are active in the community.. so the two things are interconnected. :)

@icywarm I can think of a few reaons, but promarily, not everyone knows how to use photo editing software. I would like to get a better 'eye' - a shot that is awesome straight out of the camera rather than digitalised so far beyond the original image. There's no skill in the photography in that case (In My Opinion, only)

@Cherrill Thanks, I am sure you are right, there. And I appreciate the reply, @vikdaddy @michellegaynor You are very honest there, and that's probably where I am at as well. It's intesting to read other people's perspectives on images, isn't it? And it looks like @deliag feels the same way. Thank you both. @manek43509 I can undserstand exactly what you mean. I am sure I feel exactly the same! @bethanherbert It;s interesting reading other peoples experiences, thank you @elephantgirl - how can you see a rating of a photo? Sorry if that's daft question! @katiegc24 back to the 'friends vs quality dilemma! Thannks for the compliment BTW Very kind of you :)

@rhubarbwhine If you have an Ace membership you can see your Top rated pics. Guess looking at the number of views/comments/favs can give you an idea if you don't have an Ace membership.
