People say to me...

"Don't they ask you questions when you make shots like these?" (@geertje)

"I want to know how you brave taking "street shots" (@michellegaynor)

"How did you become so brave, Andrew? I tried to take a picture of a random today and completely freaked out and ran away." (@ejgrey)

"Shot at 18mm? You were really close! I admire your tenacity to do this...brave!" (@semrants)

"Do you ask these people before you take photographs of them?" (@goobah)

"Do you have a mega powerful zoom lense? These people always look as if they have no idea you're there" (@psychographer)

"You've got some balls with these pics, maybe you should post up your technique for your street photography in the discussions" (@thomas_lans)

Well @thomas_lans I'm doing that right now.

I'm not Brave, I don't have a zoom lens... I'm VERY SNEAKY

Okay not that sneaky...

Mainly I just pretend that I'm holding the camera innocently while all the time I'm actually taking photos of them.

Other people spot me doing it but Its rare if the subject does.

In my opinion an SLR is too big to take these sorts of photo's unless you're taking them from a distance. My Sony NEX-5 is perfect. Its small discrete but most importantly It has a flip out screen so I can frame up the shot with the camera in any position.

But sometimes you've just to go for it. I really wanted to get the below photo so I just reached round the person in front of me and took one shot. luckily it was perfect.

You get fantastic results for your sneakiness. One day I will become that sneaky person :o)xx

i'm practicing the sneakiness too.....hiding in my car in car parks... i'm sure i'll be on crimewatch soon. i am loving your tube pictures...keep them coming!

Haha... I like your camera through the newspaper cutout photo! Very sneaky indeed! I'm waiting for the day when one of the random "street shots" posted ends up being a fellow 365er and they get a surprise to see themselves on the popular page!

actually it is possible to get shots like this with an SLR without anyone noticing you just have to wear the camera around your neck angled up slightly on auto focus and use an infra red remote to trigger, :)

haha nice. I think my 550d is a little too obtrusive for shots like these unfortunately. Better take the ixus 70 :-) I agree with @amyhughes that shot is IMO the best one you've got in that album so far. Love it. Keep 'em coming!

Thanks Andrew for the tutorial on street photography and funny too! I was thinking of investing in a more discreet camera, I've made a mental note for a flip screen haha!

@andrewdearling I love your picture with the paper and the camera hidden away
except for.......

Nod
I use NEX5 also sometimes. It's great for street shot as you have a lot of flexibility with the camera. The only issue I have with it is the noise! Shutter sound is like a machine gun. I prefer something more quiet tho.

I love your random stranger shots! Your lens cut through the paper was hilarious!
March 2nd, 2011
@viranod yeah the shutter sound it quite loud. hopefully then they update the range they'll be SLT so that problem will disappear. Luckily the tube is loud enough to cover the shutter sound

@amyhughes wow, thanks thats very kind. the subject was just perfect :)

Can't you get arrested for this :-))
March 2nd, 2011
i really love all these photos andrew, i think youre an absolute legend!

Now I need another camera, although I do like your international spy look and am tempted to try that, Haha!
You are sneaky!!!
March 3rd, 2011
@glyn as long as it is in a public place, you dont stalk the subject or cause an obstruction then no you cant get arrested for it :D

Damn that's amazing and courageous... I'd probably get happy slapped for my cheek!
Thanks for sharing.

love these pics, I've switched my camera to silent a few weeks ago but all the photos i get have missing heads and awful framing - there's no flip out screen though. There's a classical photographer from the 30's who used to do this in the NY subway, and Luc Delahaye does it in the Paris Metro, he does what Lee Gordon suggests and puts a cable release through his jacket into his pocket - days before remote control!!! Well done. @asrai
