New Faces - how are these picked?

March 7th, 2011
Just wondered how these are picked - seen people that have more photos than me as new faces? Don't think i've ever been a new face - but how would you know?

I was curious about this too...

a 3rd curious one, i've never seen myself on new faces either but i could have missed it

I just happened to see mine one day. It was somewhere around my 2 week point I think?

It only shows people who signed up in the last 30 days, and uses the same metrics as the rest of the popularity stuff :)

Members with ace account are given more exposure. Their photos will get featured more than those who just have a normal account.

@eyebrows Not sure about that - I saw someone on there that's been on since the 1st Jan like myself?

I have not made new faces or popular page, but have noticed that some people who have been around much longer than me are on both new faces and popular sometimes weekly. I gave up trying to figure it out and it seems the answers on here just go back to the "magic monkeys" do it. :-)

@lrappa Ha ha yeah i've read about the magic monkeys too :-)

@lrappa im with you, ive never made either, and i also believe it has more to do with popularity than being an Ace account.

@staciehighland Well, I do get that a person who makes the popular page will get there more often, that makes sense of course b/c people like their work...just seems confusing that people I found through the popular page are later shown as a new face regularly? Just curious more than anything...I am happy for those that have gotten on both!

Yeah I just saw a photo on the popular page that has 1 fav and only 30 views??? I've had photos with more fav and more views that never made it to popular - doesn't really make sense? Oh well :-)

@tnaki hrm I'm sure that's what Ross told me, maybe I'm getting forgetful in my old age. It's something along those lines though, a time-based cut-off.

Also as to "getting on the popular page" it's more likely to be favs/views/comments as a proportion of how many followers someone has, which counts. Someone with 30 followers getting 30 views is a lot more impressive than someone with 300 followers getting 30 views, like.

I was lucky enough to get on the new faces page back when I was in my first month and didn't have many friends here, so I definitely wasn't popular. I made the popular page once but much later. I wondered about the same thing though as some new faces pictures have not been visited often at all and others are on the popular page at the same time, which I personally find redundant.
About the different amount of views and favs I have the theory that the "magic monkeys" try to choose an equal amount of newcomers and oldies and sometimes don't pick pictures that are really popular but those that stick out or appeal to them, which is weird as that is a very special definition of popular. As I always really enjoy the popular pictures I don't mind so much though.

@tnaki I noticed the same thing today.

@kchuk Yeah I saw someones photo on the popular page that didn't even have a fav? I guess it really is a random draw sometimes :-)

I was wondering why it seems the 'new faces' page has the same 10 people on it. Even if you click 'shuffle' it just shuffles around the same 10 people...Are there really only 10 new faces to choose from? Wierd?

what I wonder about is there are some really great pics that don't make it then I see others that make it and I'm like "why"? no offence but I've seen pics of food...a lighter....the lighter 1 I didn't really understand how it made it?? Maybe it's just random?? I've made it once and it is a good feeling and I got a few more followers after making it

I think I've decided not to judge my work by being "chosen" for any viewing medium here. I am here for the purpose to keep me creating. I've also about deduced that the criteria for "making it" into those showings has little to do with the quality of one's work. I no longer care. I just enjoy my own and other's work here, and that is all.
