Today, I enjoyed a day at our local botanical gardens where there is a lake with ducks and egrets . I'm not sure if cranes and egrets are related, but they look fairly similar :) I will work on a paper crane tomorrow, but for now I offer a photo of this beautiful bird. Thankfully, my family members in Japan are safe, but I'm so heartbroken for those who have been lost, and for the family members who are waiting for news. Let's all give what we can.
I made my first paper crane last night around midnight. I'm now working on a project called Help Japan: 1,000 Paper Cranes to fold and photograph 1,000 paper cranes. I'm not sure how long it's gonna take, but I spent all night folding just 50 in six hours!
I am also selling prints of all the photos I take in this project for $10 each and donated all the proceeds to Red Cross to help Japan.
@jasonbarnette thats awesome! I was thinking of doing something similar to that as well. Back in HS i made 1,000 of them im thinking i might have to do it again. It took me ~2wks then near the end i was folding each one in about 10mins-ish lol
For those that do not know, old Japanese legends say that making 1,000 paper cranes will grant you one wish.
@3nder And not just a wish, but according to the legend the wish will be granted by a crane. Ancient Japanese believed cranes lived for 1,000 years so they were considered mystical and holy.
I've been working 8 hours since midnight last night and folded 64 now. I'm thinking it's gonna take me a couple of weeks as well, but I'm so excited to be shooting these photos and selling prints for a good cause!
@asrai As I am making my origami mesh paper cranes and looking to see how others took the photo, I was impressed by the actual photo and the editing you did. Hoping to fold my ten cranes to get the photo done tomorrow.
@naomi I use this site for most of my origami. http://www.origami-instructions.com/ I also have a really good crane I took when I was in Japan. The key is when you make the tail and neck, to remember not just to fold upwards, but the fold up into the bird (by reversing the fold) and have it match up with the existing point of what will be the wings.
@3nder What is most interesting is the slightly different crane styles that each person has in their photos. Thanks for starting this. @asrai I had too many options to decide from and went crazy with the collage style.
I took this last month, but the intentions still count.
Not the most detailed tho.. If you look on youtube you can find a few vids for it easily enough if you arent as familiar with origami symbols
