Books - advice please!

March 14th, 2011
Hi all

I thought I would ask if anyone knows of good books to get on still life or indoor photography? I've had a look on Amazon and there are a LOT! I am confined to home after major spinal surgery, and am struggling to find new ideas for still life shots. I've probably done 'fizzy flower' shots to death (although I am having another go today). I have mobility problems in that I cant bend, stretch or twist...so my options are limited. Any help/advice/ideas anyone has would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance

Lucy :)

If you have a lighter kicking about it's nice for a slow exposure shot - striking the flintwheel leaves lovely trails, if you get the timing right at around 1/2 a second exposure you can catch the flame halfway to lighting which usually looks really interesting...

Actually to continue, setting unusual objects alight with the help of small amounts of flammable liquid is hilariously rewarding and can be done without much moving, because it's not very predictable it makes for a good subject...

'Still life and close up photography', I haven't read it but Michael Busselle is a good photographer who knows his stuff, thats on there for like a couple of quid i just saw. Good luck, if i was looking at lots of indoor photos i'd try and look through past professionals/masters and think about new twists on old classics, may give some ideas?

@killerjackalope ooo I quite fancy doing a little firelighting....only problem is if I set the house alight I wont be able to run away!

@chewyteeth thanks for the book rec - I'll check that out. I'm going to trawl the net as well for pro websites and see what I can find.

@looseimages Kitchen countertops are pretty much always both fire and heat resistant so unlike to damage them either... I have a bad habit of trying to get nice pictures by setting my desk on fire, still working on it but the whole thing's glass so there's a pretty photo in there...

I remember when we were teenagers setting our hands on fire in the street with deodorant spray, and you don't get burnt but you scare pedestrians half to death, but I'm not hundred percent you don't get burnt and I'm not suggesting anyone burns anything with deodorant cans!!!!

@chewyteeth My brother attacked me with a spray can flamethrower yesterday, actually to be fair we try to injure eachother in insane ways all the time...

Oh water drops aren't flammable... Though maybe you're sick of water shots in general with the fizzy stuff...

@killerjackalope I havent done water drops as such, but i think it might involve me bending over the sink...which I might be able to do in a week or 2! I noticed theres a candles challenge ( I think - could be the drugs tho ) so I might have a go at that... no water involved on todays posting - well just a little!

Hey, I'm having a spinal operation in a few months that will leave me confined to a hospital bed for a few weeks and taking photos is something that I'm quite worried about! I would really appreciate it if I could have some suggestions :) Hope you feel better soon!

@cally I've got a word file and add ideas to that. I only knew a couple of weeks ago that I'd need an op...hence why I am running low on inspiration. Luckily I was only in hospital for a couple of days - I took my drip and the ceiling as that was about all I could see!!! Not really sure what you could take for a few weeks - lots of candids of visitors, nurses or pics of all the flowers you will receive from well wishers? I hope the op goes well for you :)

@looseimages Thank you :) I know I want a photo of my surgeon the day I go into hospital - he's lovely! But past that? May have to cheat a little and direct my boyfriend or my father to take a photo for me! Luckily I have months to prepare. I'm not massively mobile at the moment, although some days are worse than others, and when I'm really stiff I find that just macros of odd stuff on my desk will work. Or looking at old stuff in new ways that I don't really have to move to. Failing that, I have my pets :) Hope that helps a little!
