Online Photography Courses

March 15th, 2011
Hi Everyone,

Hope you are all having a lovely Tuesday.

Just wondered if any of you fab photographers have done any online courses?

I have come across two, but just not sure whether it's worth going ahead, or instead just doing day courses with local photographers?

I have found these two:

and also

Any feedback would be grateful.

Thanks all, Becky

After a lot of research, I signed up for the New York Institute of Photography: http://www.nyip.com/. It's been a wonderful course, it's not really on-line as much as it is home school. They send you the Units in the mail and you have tests and projects that you actually mail back and have critiqued by your assigned instructor. You send them a blank cassette, he/she records their thoughts and they mail it back to you. When I signed up they were giving 3 years to complete the course. You get all sorts of stuff with it and I've really enjoyed it. I haven't finished yet but plan to. They are also on FB: http://www.facebook.com/NYIPhoto
They have on-line forums, podcasts and more. The only thing I could even say negative about it is that the material they send is outdated as far as the times go. The photographs they use in their booklets look very 70's to me and I thought they would be more updated. But I got over it and took it for the education not fashion. Lol Hope this helps, now I want to go pull out my stuff and study! Good Luck (this was a great find for me as a stay-at-home-mom because going to classes at the college weren't an option for me at the time I signed up).

I was thinking of doing the photography institute one as it's half the price of the college course I want to do but still haven't decided. I so desperately want to do the college course mainly for being able to get one to one with a tutor plus the college course does film as well as digital so I get to develop my own film etc. I'm doing that just now on the taster course I'm doing. Only drawback I find is the course is a NC course. I could still go professional after it but I know I would want to takeit further and go for HNC then HND. At the mo I could do the HNC for free as I haven't went to college since leaving school but I think there is talk of the government scrapping that this year. Don't know too much about it as I've never really looked into it, just talk between friends really.

I have heard the PI one is really good though if you want to do it.

the cost for NYIP seems high for the dated materials. from what i have seen of the materials, it might be something to consider a different option, such as buying a few books on photography and starting that route. for the costs that i have seen i would avoid them. most are not accredited, so that is really not an option.

i have helped several people get started and the answer has always been RTFM (read a few books) then we discuss over coffee. you could probably find a way to do something like that here - get an ace, use one album for learning and critique.

just a thought.

I took a class at the local Art College and the classroom environment was well worth the money. I had the ability to ask questions when I was not grasping something, we had group field trips, and also group critique where we could go indepth into the hows and whys or our photos. It was also really nice to have other class members and see what they were doing and how they were doing each photo. I think an online class can be beneficial, but a classroom setting pushed me much farther in my skills.
