Tips for the newbie on 365

March 18th, 2011
I am finding that 365 is pretty easy to navigate and figure out but being the new kid on the block always offers a bit of time before you feel totally comfortable and at home so I thought I would ask for your tips or advice when it comes to 365!

What do you suggest? Any tips on where to go and what to do while here?

I can't wait to "meet" everyone and grow my love of photography here!

I'm still new myself but what has helped me the most was visiting the popular page, following people whose pictures I liked (which I found on the popular page, the new faces or the latest page) and taking part in the weekly theme, because that's so much fun.
Well, have fun and good luck with your photography, which is already pretty cool!

Welcome Becky, as an "old one" my advice would be "never forget you're doing the project for yourself". As Janna said you can find people you would like to follow on PP, latest, new faces and discussion pages and the best thing is to comment on other's pictures and follow them then you'll have feed back. In a word get involved... and be patient ;-)

@mylensonlife Welcome :-) The time will fly by before you know it. Check out daily shoot for when you need some inspiration. Also, even though you can only choose 1 photo for the day, save the others that you love and try retaking them another day

I'm new too. I want more friends, lol! How do I find more people to share with and follow?
March 18th, 2011
@cdivino hey! When i started, i found that a good way to see shots i liked was to search for tags in the search bar at the top. Then i just started commenting on what i saw...it doesn't take long to get a few conversations going :)

@craigdtull The dynamic is so different from Facebook! I like commenting on people's photos, I just worry about the etiquette of following others. Is it ok to just follow people I like, or should I be getting to know them first?
Also, I worry my photos are boring! Is this a common insecurity, lol?!
I'm so excited to develop my own 365 community :)
March 18th, 2011
@cdivino as for following...go for it! There's no rules there! You'll find that some people don't really reply back [for reasons unknown] but most people will be pleased to have a new follower...and a potential new person to interact with.
As for lacking confidence and feeling a 'meh' about your shots, that's totally normal too. There will be days when you feel like giving up [a year is a long time to remain upbeat] but there will be days when you're buzzing and so pleased to be doing the project! Some people are here to show off amazing talent, whereas some people see it as a photo diary of their life...just have fun with your project and i'm sure others will respond to that :)

You don't have to know people before you follow them!
When I started out I did what is described above: browse through the tags, the popular page, the latest page and the new faces, leave comments, start following people, participate a bit in the forum and before I knew it I had made some new online friends.

And as for boring shots: it's impossible to peak 365 times a year and I am pretty sure that everyone here has uploaded shots they are not satisfied with at all :)

@mylensonlife @cdivino Following you both now. :)

I'm still fairly new myself, at least I feel like I am. As others have said, go to the popular page, the new faces page, the latest page and start commenting and following. No rules. :)

@mylensonlife be sure to join in conversations, follow people, comment and fav photos . people will follow back and comment your photos aswell, its a great way to meet people and really enjoy your project! i know if i wasnt doing so i would get bored quicker and stop my project but everyone here is great at helping to keep everyone motivated to keep going!

@cdivino I absolutely get where you are coming from with your second comment! It is very different from FB and I too wonder if my work is not "good enough" yet to be followed.

@karens68 THANKS!

@brandywalker365 @halkia @craigdtull @cdivino @rustla @parisouailleurs @jannaellen - you have all offered up great tips and things that I am sure will help. I have been in social media (from another angle) for quite some time that I forgot what it's like being the new kid in a world like this that you have no prior experience. :D

My above brought me to another question - do I have to @ each person for them to get the reply or since this is a thread of sorts, will they get the notification either way?
March 18th, 2011
@mylensonlife yeah, you need to hit reply for each person to receive the notification. Same goes when they comment on your photo and you want them to see your reply on your page :)
March 18th, 2011
but you dont have to do the @---- when commenting on their photo on their profile they will be alerted, but on your own photos and in discussions you will want to do it if you want them to see your reply
March 18th, 2011
@mylensonlife The @ reply thing confused me too! You're not alone, lol!

Now I just wish there was a like button!
March 18th, 2011
@cdivino - I am so with you on the LIKE button! I always look for that little LIKE everywhere I go. Darn FB! LOL

@craigdtull @brandywalker365 @gill You guys are the best! Thanks!
March 18th, 2011
Ha! I only JUST discovered the notifications! I always wondered how the @ system worked. Now I know. Duh!

I do pretty much the same things as others had said, look through the popular/latest pages and also browse by tags to find photos and photographers that I admire. I started following people that way (and yeah, aside from a couple of outside friends, I didn't know anybody I was following)

I love 365 and I'm constantly inspired by everyone else's work! It definitely encourages me to get better, especially when I'm feeling like my work isn't up to par, either.

@polarvrtx I agree about the inspiration from others here. As for the @ system, I was used to it from Twitter but not sure if it worked the same here. I am not sure that I know anyone here. I have found a few blogging acquaintances but I don't "know" them. I am happy that I was not the only one learning here today! :)
Have a great Friday!

I'm new too. I'm still finding my way around this. I just read that the theme is bubbles .. for the week? How do u know what the theme is for the week?
March 18th, 2011
@cdivino @mylensonlife I agree with what everyone else has said. One thing I have noticed is that a lot of people, old and new, start discussions without researching if they have already been discussed. Please don't take this to mean you can't start a discussion or that any discussion is not new, but to see several of the same discussions about the same subject in the same week or two is frustrating. That being said, it is nice to revisit a discussion every so often to see if the popular opinion has changed, i.e. the LIKE button. I'm not saying you are going to start some new thread about this, it just popped into my head because it was a fairly recent discussion, thats all.

Also, don't get caught up in the "I have take an amazing picture and get it on the popular page" mentality. It is great to get new followers and get featured, but unless that is why you are on on here, it isn't a competition, it is whatever you are trying to make it.

Last thing and I will step down from my soapbox, try to participate in the object challenge or theme challenges when/if you can. On the right hand side under the "365 Loves..." is a link to the weekly theme run by Ross(aka the man who runs this wonderful site) and under the dicuss tab at the top is a Themes & Competitions selection. You can find some others that other users facilitate.
