Selling your photographs (non professionals)??

March 18th, 2011
I've been wondering for a while about whether i would be capable of selling some of my photographs.
I'm currently on sick leave, and get very little money a month, so if i could sell something that i love doing, it would be amazing, as well as boost my confidence greatly.

The only problem is, i don't know how to go about doing this.
So i wanted to know whether any other 365ers (who aren't professionals!) sell their photo's, and what websites do you use?

I know my photo's are rubbish compared to most (i'm really not fishing for compliments here), but for some reason, people still seem to like them, and i thought that as people on here like them, maybe other people would be willing to even pay for them.

If anyone has any tips or advice on this i would be really greatful (:

Thanks in advance!

A couple of weeks ago on "The Gadget Show" (Channel 5) one of the tasks was to make money from tech. They tried selling photos on the web using istockphoto.com. They sold nothing and so made no money with photos.
I don't mean to negative but I do not think a fortune is to be made here.
But you could give it a try as you don't have any costs, just profit if anything gets sold.
Good luck !

I know some people use etsy.com. Given your subject matter, you may think about approaching sites that are directly related to the subject. See if they would be interested in purchasing some of your photos.

I currently just use my facebook page. I've had some people contact me and I've sold a few photos from there.

I also have some listed on RedBubble but haven't sold anything there yet.

Don't forget about model release forms, property release forms. My guess is without these you could seriously end up out of pocket if someone's lawyers come after you.

I've started using shutterfly but haven't had the time to look into the selling of shots but there are a few people on here that use it for selling. I'll get round to it one day.

When I lived in Maine, USA, I sold some prints through a tourist shop. I also had some 5x7 cards printed up. Those sold the best. Good luck!

I was approached to donate one of my photographs to an art auction (matted and framed). In appreciation for my donation, I will be given a booth free of charge, where I can sell my photos during the June musical festival. I saw Courtney's reply about selling 5X7's. I was also told that this is a good size to sell at the festival. I am also thinking of something that one could find at a tourist shop, since this festival attracts visitors from around the world. I know local shops, especially the small boutiques and the gift shops accept items for sale and you pay a commission. I am also thinking about asking my hair stylist about selling photos in his shop. He shows other things for sale that are locally made. I am not looking for a lot of money, but any extra money would be welcome. I wish you the best!

Another idea, that is saleable, is to select images to print onto canvas. Certain works (I have done a few of mine (image Candy RaggaMUFFIN Dreams, Sunsets and Watercolour Landscape) transpose extremely well into original artworks, and sell well on ebay and to arty Home Decor stores on consignment.

You could try selling on DeviantArt.
