Supermoon help!

March 19th, 2011
Any tips or hints on getting good pictures of the moon?? In case you haven't heard, the moon is supposed to be HUGE tonight! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My moon photo was taken with the following settings..
250mm, f/5.6, 1/800 sec, ISO 3200 using a Canon 550D
Is that any help to you ?

@jdonnelly does using a higher ISO mean more noise?

@kelseyyx23 Hi Kelsey.

Tips from me would be (this assumes you have manual mode on your camera and it is night time, i.e. the moon is bright in the dark sky):-

- use the longest lens you have
- use a tripod
- use LOWEST ISO possible, i.e. 100
- set aperture to f11
- set shutter speed to about 1/125th
- bracket your exposure +- 1 stop

Good luck!

@looseimages yes but the Canon works very well at a high ISO as you can see in the photo above.
If your worried about it try different settings but don't be afraid to try a higher ISO it might just be worth it.

@jdonnelly ok I'll give that a try as well. I've just started using my Canon again, but only tripod mounted (I've had spinal surgery a week ago)...but I'd fogotten what a fab machine it is! I'm getting it set up shortly. Thanks for the advice :)

Hee
Mine was captured tonight (19/03/11 11:26pm) @ 300mm 1/250s, F8.0, ISO200
The supermoon tonight is a bright hence able to use low ISO & faster shutter speed.

The below shot was captured a week ago @ 300mm 1/125s F5.6 ISO800
The moon brightness a bit low, so the setting as mentioned above.

(Both shot was shot in Manual mode & handheld...as my tripod gave up on me a few weeks ago)

Great advice! I was wondering the same thing!
I was thinking of setting up in my driveway and waiting for the moon to rise through the trees. How will street lights affect my photo. I'm thinking I have to go somewhere that is darker?

@shutterbugger as little ambient light as possible is best. If your shutter speed is fast enough you don't need a tripod, I didn't use one for my shot.
March 19th, 2011
@jdonnelly i found the high ISO worked great too

I usually shoot through a 4.5 Inch Newtonian Reflector Telescope on a German Equatorial Mount.

Thanks for your help everyone! @nodecaff, that website really helps!
I'm still learning how to use my Canon, and I don't have a tripod so I'm not sure how good this will be. But thanks so much everyone!

I've been reading these tips too! I have spent last night trying to get a good moon pic and most of this evening lol. I haven't got a tripod but i think i must have shaky hands!!

F32, 1/100 shutter, iso200, 300mm (450mm due to DX sensor). Tripod with cable release. I wish I would've shot it in RAW, I think the image would've come out clearer... I just played around with different apertures and shutters until I found what I liked. Definitely can't do auto stuff and get the details in a moon well, gotta do a manual exposure.

@kelseyyx23 use anything that can stabilize the camera. Lots of folks use little bean bags for just that purpose. Pillows, bunched up clothes, zip lock bag of flour or sugar - if you can mold it, it can hold it!

Well I don't have the lens for moonpictures. But I realy like the light the moon gifs tonight, so i tried to catch the colours of town.

I could only get a white/circle with no detail - how do I get the focus?
March 19th, 2011
@c_t - you need to underexpose a lot otherwise the camera overcompensates for the fact that it is so dark. Set a shutter speed that you can hand-hold with minimum shake (if you've got a tripod still go for a fastish speed to minimise any slight movement of the pod) and then set the aperture to underexpose by ~3EV. The actual amount will depend on what other background light there is, e.g. streetlamps/traffic etc.

@nodecaff Great advice!

I just muck about till it comes out ok. Hee hee. I did use a tripod though.

My settings were
Exposure: 0.004 sec (1/250)
Aperture: f/8.0
ISO Speed: 100
Focal Length: 210 mm
