Moon arghh!!!

March 19th, 2011
I have spent all evening trying to get a shot of the moon and i can't do it:-( its driving me nuts. I've got a canon 500d am using manual but its just now working - any tips?i don't have a tripod wishing i did now

Don't point directly at the moon. You'll get a haze glow. If you have a mirror lock up feature on your camera, use it. The tripod would be extremely helpful, though.

ive been trying to - took 266 pics and im not really that happy with any, tried so many settings but just not happy at all!! :(

Sorry not gonna be any help but i've been trying too. Wish i'd thought about it earlier as i've got a telescope and wanted to see if i could attach it somehow!
Keep trying n goodluck!

I couldn't even find it in the sky the several times I went out on my balcony this evening to find it, so I refuse to take its photo LOL!

There's fog :/ I just see a giant neon glow behind it here :(

Looks beautiful the moon tonight.. I tried to have a go with my old Fuji, but I'm poo. Didn't get any good pictures, took lots too!

I wish I had a better lens! so much!

I've got some reasonable shots - but so many good photos today I'm not sure if one will make it to my 365. When I've processed them I'll post the link to my flickr page where they'll end up. When the moon rose here, it was a deep blood red, gradually lightening as it got higher in the sky. I was outside for a good couple of hours in all!

@moncooga - you can point directly at it as long as you underexpose by ~3EV

This one of mine was taken with the moon smack bang in the middle of the shot.

There's some wispy cloud over it at the moment so i don't know if this is interfering with it:-( @stevenburbidge yep it was blood red here too but i couldn't get a good shot from my back garden lol. I've just been out to take some more using varied settings lol so am going to upload them and crop and see lol. My husband is laughing at me getting my hair off LOL.

Helen. thank you for the tip. I'm getting ready to shoot tonight with about 5 cameras. 4 are film. I know you can under by -3 with digital. Does that also translate into 3 f stops for film?

Fast shutter worked for me...bish bash bosh! :)
March 19th, 2011
I just got my shot of the moon for my 365 :-)

My settings on my D3100 were : ISO 100 | Exposure 0.001 sec (10/10000) | Aperture f/5.6

Hope this helps

@moncooga - film; digital, it's the same. The settings I used for my shot were f5.6, shutter speed 1/320, ISO200 and focal length 300mm.
March 19th, 2011
@aitch2803 Thank you. I'll be shooting @ 220 mm. I was never a night shooter, and tried to go wide @1.8. I'll use your settings for a benchmark.
March 19th, 2011
@moncooga - Good luck Chris! I'll be looking out for the pics to appear on here.

The moon is hiding behind the clouds! :-(
March 20th, 2011
dissapointed too. clouds a bitch!
March 20th, 2011
all i have are grey clouds here, too! BOOOOO =(

I had a go at shooting the moon this evening. I was disappointed not to get any detail of the moon, but having read this thread I can now see that my shot was over exposed, so I will pretend that I meant to do that ;)
there were colours round the moon this evening, greens & pinks, looked amazing!
My shot may not be perfect, but I like it :)

March 20th, 2011
@cariadon i am having the same issue...although, i am blaming mine on that i have had the camera for all of 24 hours!! lol...good luck!
March 20th, 2011
Don't point straight at the moon, a tripod would be very useful. Here is mine for the evening.
March 20th, 2011
Loving these moon shots.

My settings were
Exposure: 0.004 sec (1/250)
Aperture: f/8.0
ISO Speed: 100
Focal Length: 210 mm

I had been told to expose for the moon...not for the sky around it. As you know the camera wants to make everything gray...so you have to let it tell you it will be underexposed to make the sky black and the moon not.

Here a mine so far this year...

Beautiful moon shots everyone! I was looking forward to it too, but here in Southern California we are covered with clouds and expecting a big storm. Thanks for sharing your view of it! @laurence_adams @daffodill @melmellow @scrapnyak @specky

I did it with an ultra zoom point-and-shoot camera (Olympus):

:) I'm happy

Here's a link to my moon shot on flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/stevenandrachelb/5541098935/
The blood red colour of it as it rose was amazing!
My 365 shot for today ended up being one illuminated solely by the moonlight - a nice twist on the theme!
