I have spent all evening trying to get a shot of the moon and i can't do it:-( its driving me nuts. I've got a canon 500d am using manual but its just now working - any tips?i don't have a tripod wishing i did now
Don't point directly at the moon. You'll get a haze glow. If you have a mirror lock up feature on your camera, use it. The tripod would be extremely helpful, though.
Sorry not gonna be any help but i've been trying too. Wish i'd thought about it earlier as i've got a telescope and wanted to see if i could attach it somehow!
Keep trying n goodluck!
I've got some reasonable shots - but so many good photos today I'm not sure if one will make it to my 365. When I've processed them I'll post the link to my flickr page where they'll end up. When the moon rose here, it was a deep blood red, gradually lightening as it got higher in the sky. I was outside for a good couple of hours in all!
There's some wispy cloud over it at the moment so i don't know if this is interfering with it:-( @stevenburbidge yep it was blood red here too but i couldn't get a good shot from my back garden lol. I've just been out to take some more using varied settings lol so am going to upload them and crop and see lol. My husband is laughing at me getting my hair off LOL.
Helen. thank you for the tip. I'm getting ready to shoot tonight with about 5 cameras. 4 are film. I know you can under by -3 with digital. Does that also translate into 3 f stops for film?
I had a go at shooting the moon this evening. I was disappointed not to get any detail of the moon, but having read this thread I can now see that my shot was over exposed, so I will pretend that I meant to do that ;)
there were colours round the moon this evening, greens & pinks, looked amazing!
My shot may not be perfect, but I like it :)
I had been told to expose for the moon...not for the sky around it. As you know the camera wants to make everything gray...so you have to let it tell you it will be underexposed to make the sky black and the moon not.
Beautiful moon shots everyone! I was looking forward to it too, but here in Southern California we are covered with clouds and expecting a big storm. Thanks for sharing your view of it! @laurence_adams@daffodill@melmellow@scrapnyak@specky

My 365 shot for today ended up being one illuminated solely by the moonlight - a nice twist on the theme!
Keep trying n goodluck!
This one of mine was taken with the moon smack bang in the middle of the shot.
My settings on my D3100 were : ISO 100 | Exposure 0.001 sec (10/10000) | Aperture f/5.6
Hope this helps
