Please help - I need some good books

April 8th, 2011
Hello my fellow 365er's. I just got a nikon d3100. I need some sugestions on some good reads on how to best use it and other photography books in general. I am very new to this whole photography thing and I am very behind on my terminology and such. So I am looking for a good book or books on learing what everything means and how to best use my camera and such. Thanks so much for any and all suggestions

I really liked Bryan Peterson's Field Guide To Photography. It's the book I'm holding in my profile pic, haha. It's really easy to understand, and he pretty much covers all the basics. :)

well Brooke I'm new too & I brought the Nikon D5000 for Dummies & Nikon D5000 From Snapshots to Great Shots by Jeff Revell. I'm working my way through the Dummies book first. I got them through bookdepository.co.uk & am finding the Dummies book is great for a beginner. Hope this helps a little.

@winshez it helps a lot. I like my shots but I need to understand how a camera works and how a camera sees things so that I can get a better shot with my camera. Thanks so much for the reply. I am gonna see if there is a dummies for Nikon in the bookstores. thanks again.

I always start with the Operation Guide that comes with the camera... the rest is all playing around.

@joymol
Yes, read the guide to find out what the controls do, then have fun experimenting. The only way to really learn is to try new ideas of your own and make a note of any early mistakes so that you know what to avoid ... and, of course, looking at and commenting on other members' work here and reading their responses, whether positive or negative, helps a lot, too! It has certainly helped me, and I hope never to stop learning, so enjoy!

I agree with Jason. Make sure you know what all the buttons and settings on the camera do and are, and the camera manual is the best way to do this. Before I started this project I used my camera in auto mode all the time, and sometimes I still do if I'm in a rush to get something and have not time for setup. But when I started this project I made up my mind to get the manual out and read it through, and play with all the buttons till I understood what they do. Ever since it's been trial and error, but fun. Also, my husband got me digital photography for dummies and I'm still going through that. The lens section has been very helpful so far.

Scott Kelby's Digital Photgraphy series is a good read.They are easy to understand, a smooth read and very informative. The first book is pretty general, the other 2 deal more specifically with portrait/studio photography but are still great to have.

@bobfoto @wordpixman @lislee75 @shadesofgrey Thank you everyone, I am reading the manual and playing with the settings. But I have now got a few good titles to read to help me with the rest of it that the manual doesn't tell me about. Thanks again everyone you have been very helpful.
