Shooting Raw images

January 5th, 2010
I am learning how to use my camera as well as learning how to "fix" or adjust images & am shooting raw files some of the time. Why do we have to convert the raw file to a jpeg to upload it to 365 project?

I may be able to answer that, I'll just give it a shot. Raw is not a commonly available imagetype and requires special software to open and view. Even the different applications available for RAW processing may each work a bit differently with these files. Certainly not every computer with everyday software will be able to open them.

There are however a few very common imagetypes that are supported by all kinds of systems, them being computers, mobile devices or different operating systems, and JPG is one of those that also has the added benefit on being download friendly because of it's compression. I wouldn't be surprised if the site also accepts a few others like gif, bmp or png, but I'll leave that to the site admins to answer :-)

For example, I like browsing the site from my Android based mobile phone, works like a charm. But if I'd have to download those big bulky raw files over the air, the fun would soon be out of it :-) I don't think my phone would even have enough power to properly decode and display them, there's a lot of data in a raw image.

Hope that helps :-)

Hi Kathy,

Raymond has hit the nail on the head. Jpeg's are great for interoperability between devices, basically every computer in the world supports it. As Raymond says RAW is a very complex format and most cameras manufacturers use their own custom RAW format that each piece of software needs to know about.

One of the other benefits is the compression in JPEG files is quite good, a typical photo on the 365 project may be about 150KB in size, RAW files can be anything from 4-400MB in size, that's a huge increase and would require a very long time to download, the website would be unusable, along with sucking up all your internet bandwidth.

365 Project also supports gif and png files for upload.

Thank you for explaining this. I was able to copy my raw file as a jpeg & then uploaded it. After I asked the question I had a feeling it had something to do with size as my camera can take a lot more jpeg's than raw photos.

Yes, RAW files are huge. I shoot RAW (haven't crashed Ross's site yet! Hope I don't! You may have a setting called "lossless compressed". This helps if you do.
