advice needed - point and shoot w/ macro mode

April 19th, 2010
sad day today. my canon sd1000's screen was busted (though i know not when/how). i'm now in the market to purchase a new camera as a result, and would like one with a good macro mode.

prior to the canon, i had a nikon 5900 which took great pics, but getting the camera to actually focus was a frustrating task, taking up to 3 or 4 tries before it would focus.

as a result, i looked long and hard, reading reviews, 'window' shopping, etc. before settling down on my little canon. it's been a great camera, and its ability to focus the 1st time around on macro mode was about the best job i could find back in 2006/7.

i'm back i the same boat, and wondered if anyone would share their experience with their camera and its macro mode, and how it handles in general.

your input is much appreciated!

My point and click Olympus SP-550UZ is pretty good with macro, and it has a great zoom and wide angle as well. A versatile camera that I carry around in my handbag all the time (though I did have to buy a slightly larger handbag)

I have a Nikon Coolpix S570 p+s and really like the macro mode. The specification reckons it can focus from 3cm, which is about right. If you want to see some of my results, look at my profile picture on here (the flower was about 1cm across) or some of these from my project. http://365project.org/wormentude/365/2010-04-12 http://365project.org/wormentude/365/2010-03-15 http://365project.org/wormentude/365/2010-03-29 http://365project.org/wormentude/365/2010-02-17

I tend to be pretty happy with the results I get. It can sometimes take several attempts to focus it, but that tends to be if I don't focus on an area with enough contrast or if there's not enough light. I also have a mini tripod that helps.

The Nikon specification page for it is here. http://imaging.nikon.com/products/imaging/lineup/digitalcamera/coolpix/style/s570/index.htm

The other thing with the Nikon is that it has 5x optical zoom, which is apparently really hard to get now.

Hope this helps some. :-)

You can check out my photos. I only use point and shoot cameras and I enjoy doing macros. Currently using a Sony Cybershot H55 with 10x optical. Olympus has just put out their new SP-8000 point and shoot with 30X optical. Best wishes!

The thing to remember about focusing a P&S in macro mode is to hold the shutter down half way as you focus. Then the camera will adjust to the right focus. After that, depress the shutter all the way and your shot will look great. Here's my shot for today: http://365project.org/allie912/365/2010-04-19

thanks guys!

i've checked out all sorts of photos, reviews, and played around with cameras at different stores and decided to go with the canon sd940 is.

hopefully it'll as well as my little sd1000 does... er... did (up until the screen unexpectedly broke).
