Exif Info

Why do some of the pictures not have settings in their Exif Info?
Do people do this on purpose?
My favorite part of the site is how much I learn from looking at the Exif Info of the pictures I like.

I have no idea what the exif means and why its so important.. I do know that when it does not come up on my photos, its because of the edit program . not because I did it on purpose. to tell you the truth I wouldnt know how to remove it.

Yes, you can delete exif info. People generally do this on purpose..

I didn't realise anyone looked at that!
May 9th, 2011
I believe certain editing of photos takes away Exif info.
May 9th, 2011
@katiegc24 ooo I do on really special pictures to see how they've done it, then try to recreate - fail (obviously) - post usual blah :)

I used exif info on similar shots. I wanted to see how others did long exposures with light trails. I tried it out this weekend and got some really nice shots.

@katiegc24 @nikkers Maybe I am weird for looking at it?! :) But, for those of us in the learning stage of how to use the combination of aperture, ISO , and shutter speed to achieve good exposure and DOF...it is so helpful. Of course, editing throws off the the purity of the settings...but I still have learned so much from the Exif Info.

@nikkers - In your editing program there should be an option to remove the exif data when you export the file; for example, in Lightroom (which is what I use) you select export photo, and you get a window with options to do with file size, name, type etc and if you scroll down there is a check box that says "Minimise embedded metadata" - which is referring to the exif data.

@iandec Ah ok. I will try to leave as much of mine in as possible. Not that anyone would want to recreate my pictures hahahahaha.
May 9th, 2011
@iandec Usual blah - I don't think so! Your sooc shots are so great!
@cohare I check out the exif info too, I find it helpful in setting up some shots that I'm not sure how they achieved the effect:) I know when I post from my iPhone or double edit something (go onto Picnik, edit, and then decide that I simply must do one more thing and go back onto Picnik) it seems to take away my exif info. I didn't know you could delete it on purpose. I wonder why someone would want to?
May 9th, 2011
@cohare I never thought of that! Clever. :D
May 9th, 2011
@pwallis To get rid of the date, usually. If you don't want someone to know when you took it.. That's the main one, rather than deleting because of exposure time or whatever.
May 9th, 2011
@katiegc24 and it works in the other direction for me too. I have had people give advice to me on how to better a picture based on the Exif Info.
May 9th, 2011
@webfoot that is a BEAUTIFUL shot!
May 9th, 2011
@cohare Aaaaah yeah. Wow, this is all very clever.. I just take photos of things and experiment til I get it right, which like.. *never* happens. I should try that!
May 9th, 2011
@katiegc24 lol thanks for the info on how to remove it,, but dont have lightroom and still wouldnt remove it.. mainly because it doesnt mean anything to me.. meaning I know nothing about the tech stuff of photography, and Im not that interested in learning about it.. lol I just like to pic up my camera shove it in someones face , click and load it somewhere!! :) :) ,
May 9th, 2011
@cohare . I dont think you are weird.. Im just not interested in knowing about it, but I understand that are lot of people are. :) Thats no weird , thats learning.. :)
May 9th, 2011
I often look at it on pic's that I find interesting and wonder about the technical side of as well. I have found on my own pictures however, that some degree of editing will cause it to disapear and I don't know how to put it back when that happens.
May 9th, 2011
@nikkers Fair enough :)
May 9th, 2011
@pwallis wow - thank you - you're not too bad yourself :)

I use photoshop elements. If you use the 'Save for web' command, it will delete the exif data to reduce the file size as much as possible. By just using the normal 'save' option, the exif data is kept for all to see.
May 9th, 2011
I've looked at the exif info of quite a few photos to see how someone has achieved an effect. I'm happy to have mine available for someone else who may want to know what I've done. The info has been lost the few times that I've done last minute editing on Picnik, so the next time I do editing there I may copy and paste the info, even if just for my own records.

There is so much talent here and I'm so thankful when people are willing to share their expertise!
May 9th, 2011
@cohare Thanks. That's one of the reasons I look at exif info. It helped me with that shot.
May 9th, 2011
I don't deliberately remove it but Photoshop seems to and after reading this discussion, I do use the Save for Web feature for every shot so why it is disappearing! However anyone asks for it I would be more than happy to put it back in on the comments box.
May 9th, 2011
@cohare I use Photomatix for my HDR processing and it removes the EXIF data.

Left to my own devices I prefer to leave it in.

Firstly if u "save for web" it disappears to reduce file size

Secondly , some things u do in edit can make it disappear , hard to explain but if u open a new canvas fill it black then paste your photo on to it then when u save EXIF will disappear

thridly , sometimes my EXIF doesnt show and sometimes its nothing to do with either of these reasons but instead because i changed the setting when saving for another site and didnt switch it back ...... save as - options - theres a tick box for exif info there :)

When I crop a shot down in photoshop the act of cutting it from the original shot (with Exif info) and pasting it into a blank canvas (without exif info) causes this loss.

Although I think some people might just do it to hide that they didn't take the shot that day. ;)
May 9th, 2011
I will look at exif when I wonder what settings someone used on a shot I really like or have trouble getting exposure right on the same type of shot.

I have adopted picasa for setting up my photos as they drastically cut down the space they take on my PC while showing at a good size here (some pics at around 30KB) . That does cancel out the Exif info, but I have run out of space on my PC, which is threatening to pack up because of there being too little space.
May 9th, 2011
@cohare I frequently look at Exif info to see aperture, focal length and shutter speed. It has helped me with DOF effects.
@katiegc24 @aj1268 @pwallis @michellepj @zferrie @nodecaff I have learned a bit about Exif info. "Save for Web" in PS does destroy the Exif info, while "Save As" will preserve the Exif info.

On the other hand, my double-image post,

still has the Exif info! How's that? With Photoshop, I opened one image, reduced it and copied it. Then I opened the other image, enlarged the canvas, pasted in the first image and did a "Save As." This preserved the Exif info from the second-opened image! With Photoshop, at least, "Save for Web" versus "Save As" seems to be the key.

@harvey It never occurred to me that some people would intentionally destroy the info to wipe out the Date-and-Time taken!

cohare, usually I remove some EXIF fields to protect my privacy and hide technical details, thus strengthening my authorship. I do that with the help of this metadata remover -- it can selectively delete photo tags.

@sburbidge I use cs4 and save for web and never knew why the exif info on my images was gone. Thanks for answering that for me! I have not been purposefully hiding it as some may think!

I always look at the exif info when I find a picture I like. When I'm playing with settings on my camera I always go back and look at what worked best in my own photos, too.
