Incredible (but heartbreaking) photos of the oil spill

May 24th, 2010
I've been debating whether to post this link but ultimately decided to since as photographers, we're all trying to open our eyes to the world around us. These images of the oil spill were published in the Boston Globe's online edition today, and I thought they were incredibly powerful, beautiful (I hesitated to use this word, but I hope you understand my meaning) portrayals of a very sad, ugly catastrophe.

I hope they find a way to get this under control very, very soon.

Absolutely heartbreaking...
I'm afraid I'm a bit too emotional for all of that. In fact by the time I got to 38 and read "a young heron sits dying..." I was screaming in my head, "Dying? Don't let it die! Help it."

I'm with you on this. I really hope all of this gets better soon.

Looks like the Ohio River back in 1958/59. There was a constant oil slick on the river. Would have to wash the fishing line off when we got home from all the oil.

Oh, my. This is so sad. Humans really need to be more careful with the world... we're not the only ones living in it.

Wow these made me cry, especially the young heron. It makes you hate this world we live in. I'm only 26 and there have been so many terrible things that have happened just within the past 10 years.

I am from south Louisiana and have been to these places before. My sister had a fishing camp in Venice, LA until Hurricane Katrina damaged it. It is deeply sad to see what's happening.

We see the news over here in the Uk and articles in the paper. One of The Times corresponents dived under the surface to see what was happening out of view. his commentary was heartbreaking for the future. The dispersal chemicals are causing as much problem as the oil tho its invisible. They are being ingested by the smallest creatures which in turn get eaten by larger ones up the food chain to us eating clams and lobsters etc. This will cause cancers, infertility and deformed embryos way into the future. Every day goes by and I think that oil is still gushing out, another 24 hours has gone by......When will BP or someone get it sorted!
