Refusing to use my SLR

August 22nd, 2011
As I am nearly at the end of my 365, I have found that my motivation and inspiration have disappeared, leaving me in something of a funk. To remedy the situation, I have given myself a challenge - I am to take a week's worth of photos without touching my SLR.

I've had a lot of fun with this, and while the results are... well, pretty poor, it's really forced me to re-evaluate the way I approach my photos, having to think hard about everythign - composition, clarity, colour quality, processing, etc. It's also fascinating to see just how different each photographic device is and the variation in quality of pictures - it's really made me think about my Sony in a whole new light.

For the record, I have used my iPhone, a friends Nokia and my son's $60 GE point & click so far. I am hoping to come up with at least one other type of device before the week is out.

So, if you're looking for a bit of a challenge, I recommend doing something similar - it really forces you to get back to basics.

I honestly couldn't work my son's P&S after a few months with my new DSLR! It was sad. I will still take the occasional photo with my iPhone, as that is what I always carry with me. Great challenge, and good luck with that.

I have that challenge every day! haha....I have a Canon P and S and sometimes, only my Blackberry. It DOES make it fun! But do plan to upgrade to a DSLR soon.

its a great idea, I actually prefer my point and shoot at certain events, sometimes when I lack passion I try to remember what got me started. For me its photojournalism, I want to easily tell a story about why my community is gathering together, for you ? what started your project, the first picture you put on 365 , it must have impressed you, maybe you could start there again

I did that for a while, too! It really made me appreciate my SLR once I came back to it. Before that, I was definitely in a funk! Great advice!
Oh, and I think your iPhone and other photos are still pretty spectacular.

I started this project with the resolution to use my pocket camera as much as I could. Sort of. by limiting my tools, forcing myself to expand the way I view potential photo opportunities. Think it is working, my most popular pics on this project have been done by an even more limited tool; my mobile.

I still take a large portion of photos with my iphone or my new point and shoot. I sometimes force myself to only do SOOC for a week or two to remind me to think about things. Also the abstracts this month are really making me see everything a bit different.

I only have a point & shoot so no challenge for me!

Great idea! I might try that this week. Cell phone photos only! lol It might actually be an improvement for me. Who knows!?

@timtam_adams definitely worth it. Sometimes by choice, others by circumstance, using the android phone really is a useful exercise. Here's a kicker - I have the vignette app which allows the image to be altered on the fly, something I don't do the the Nikon SLR rig.

Way to go Tim! I shot all my picture using my iPhone with is always within reach :-) Nearly at 100! Maybe I'll switch to SLR later but I don't think so :-)

Great thread Tim, and great idea.
