The answer, my friends, is dust in the lens, the answer is dust in the lens (are you singing along?)

hahaha!
OK, in all seriousness, my camera appears to have specs of dust inside the lens (EDIT: I forgot to say that this is a point and shoot camera, a Panasonic Lumix DMC ZR1). I can shine my dental light in there and see it. it's in a spot where the lens appears to be focusing on it, and not my subject. I can't get anything macro, which is a REAL bummer because there is a HUGE praying mantis outside my room's window, and I can't get anything better than a distance shot of it. Macro is my favorite!!
Any ideas on how to remove this dust? I called a camera shop and they make it sound pretty bleak: can't take the camera apart, might try some compressed air to blow it around/off the lens, or can mail it to the company.
Any ideas??
Thanks,

Is it on the lens or on the sensor? Do you see the dust when you just look through the lens or when you look through the viewfinder of the camera?

Both; I see a big speck on the far left when looking thru the view screen thing, but also see flecks on the inside of the lens when I look into it with a bright light on it. the big fleck has been there for a few weeks, and I just try to edit it out. the flecks on the inside of the lens are almost right in the center.

.....no bueno. take it to a camera shop, have them clean it.

Sounds like you need your sensor cleaned.

@vikdaddy @lacedxxoo @autumnseden I found an online live chat for Panasonic; he had me do a factory reset on the camera, and for some reason, that worked. I can still see the flecks, but at least it's focusing now. Weird. Thanks for the assistance!

I use one of these!

Although the first time was very daunting!!!

I meant to add, if it does need a sensor cleaning, DO NOT use canned air. Use a rocket blower only. The canned/compressed air is too powerful, cannot be controlled easily and you run the risk of dripping fluid (very bad!) or blowing junk into the body of the camera which can cause serious damage.

I bought a sensor cleaning kit (solution, little squeeqee thingy's) for $20 at the camera shop. The man working there showed me how to do it properly and said if I change lenses a lot (which I do) it will save me a lot of money to do it myself because they usually charge $80 every time to have it done professionally. I probably clean mine once a month or so, and the kit lasts me probably about 6 months with the amount of solution included.

@autumnseden @pwallis @miley89 I forgot to say that this is a point and shoot camera, a Panasonic DMC ZR1. That probably changes things.... sorry!
The initial "factory reset" seemed to help, but it still doesn't want to focus on some things. I may need to send it in. Gr.

@2thgirl oooh, yeah, in that case you'll probably have to bring it in. But sometimes they can surprise you with the reasonable cost of fixing or cleaning....
