Lens Help

November 19th, 2011
Hi everyone!
I've rarely come onto this site since three weeks ago when I finished my project, and I have missed it. I also know that as far as camera/photography advice goes, you guys are the best. So here's my question:
I'm looking at lenses for my Canon DSLR (Christmas is coming!) and I'm not sure what kind to get. Definitely something cheap... But I'm just looking for what the difference is between telephoto, wide-angle, and tilt-shift.
Thanks for the help!

www.lensbaby.com has some cool toys if you are looking into tilt-shift type photography

@kelseyyx23 Wide angle is like 25mm and under
telephoto is a lens that can zoom in an out like a 55-85mm for example
and a tilt shift lens is tricky to explain. it's used to correct tall buildings so they arne't distorted, and fun stuff like making cities look like toys.

Hi Kelsey, Although not technically accurate, as a rule of thumb, think of your eyes as being the equivalent of a 50mm lens. Anything less than that, consider wide-angle and anything greater as telephoto. Looking at your portfolio, you seem to be using the 18-55mm lens (you've got wide-angle covered) so you might want to be able to get closer to your subject, in which case you may want to look at the Canon EF-S 55-250mm, or the EF 70-300mm depending on budget.

Tilt and shift lenses have movable sections so you can rotate the lens plane relative to the image plane (tilt) or move it parallel to the image plane (shift). They are generally used for architectural shots as they can correct for the 'leaning' effect you get with a normal lens. If you're after the 'model' effect, either use a lens baby (see shadesofgrey above) or do it in processing as these lenses are quite expensive and have a limited use for non-specialist photographers.

@emmar84 @shadesofgrey @gypsylady @foolmoon Thanks for your help everyone! I'm thinking now of either getting a macro or telephoto.

Hey Kelsey, I just got a shit load for my Canon.
Ricoh 50mm prime £23 ebay
Pentax 28-70
Tamron 200mm
Pentax 80-300
K mount 200mm
My secret is i bought a K mount ring adaptor that fits on the front of my Canon EOS, so apart from the £23 all the other lenses were free because film photography is obsolete yet people don't realise you can use film lenses on a digital camera with a £6.50 ring adaptor. loads of lenses fit a k mount ring adaptor, just do a search for a canon 50mm and a pentax kmount 50mm and you'll see the difference in price, all you can't do is shoot on automatic.
Your 18-55 automatic that you got with your canon is capable of doing Macro with the automatic settings.
