Christmas Light Photography

December 22nd, 2011
Back to all deep seriousness of discussion items here. I was taking photos of a lighting display that was made up of led lit frames, and noticed that the lights were doing odd things when seen on my computer screen. I was on automatic focus, but it seems that the lights were paler in the middle and surrounded my a bright halo. So while it may have looked like bokeh it was more of a two toned circle. Is this just because they are led lights versus the old fashioned bulbs which I have had no problem in taking this year. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, how did you adjust?

Yeah, I have struggled with this. I have not read up on it, but the other day was emailed this article. I hope it helps.

@christiq here are the lights. I am trying to decide if it is focus or me, but it seems that the basketball hoop in the background to the side is not that blurry. Mind you this is not my favorite photo

@brumbe thanks for posting! that's a really pretty display of lights. to me, it looks like motion blur. were you using a tripod?

@christiq no, but resting it on the roof of the car, so it should have been still. But I am the queen of motion lately.

I was stopped in traffic today and thought I'd pop a shot of the cool tail lights of the car in front of me but they dudded at the bokeh, too. LED tail lights.
