My life in photos

December 28th, 2011
I am going back in my archive of photos from places I've been to use for a gift for a family member. There are thousands (okay more like tens of thousands) of photos I have taken and it's a bit overwhelming (I'm still figuring out a good system with tags).

But it's so cool to see places and things that have sorta fallen into the back of my mind that I dont't really recall specifically that once I see them bring back so many memories. I am so addicted to documenting what I see with photos that it has now become an extension of my life.

What I'll do with all these photos in the future is still unknown, but at least I can refer back to them and remember that unexpected snowstorm, my first helicopter ride, the countless rocket launches at NASA and the other times that just amazed me.

And on top of all that, this 365 project has really documented this year of my life. A photo in my collection is definitely worth a thousand words. I'm guessing some of you have the same feeling.

I might need an intervention or help with my hoarding of digital photos. Oh well, time to go take another photo for today. ;-) Just wanted share my thoughts on why we photograph things.

Funny, I am just sat here archiving my photos on backup drives...it looks liek on average I take 3-4 thousand shots a month. Into my second year now - that LOTS of photos. Just trying to sift through so that the "good" ones I can access more easily and put into albums because as you say it's great looking back over even jut the last year in such detail!

I'm just about to finish up my first year on 365 and was thinking about how it has recorded so many different aspects of my life that I wouldn't have normally paid attention to- like the huge variety of mushrooms that grow in my backyard, unexpected visitors in my garden (a toad and a kooky squirrel), the way the trees bend over my backyard, how leaves fall on the street and welcome mat, the beauty of a sunflower, waterfall or any given wildflower or butterfly, traffic lights, old barns, vegetables on my cutting board, etc. etc. etc.! And the most major change has been the addition of my fifth appendage (the camera) which never leaves my side now. I love looking over the thumbnails of each month and remembering the shots and why I took them. And it's also fun to jump over to the commentary. What a great 365 year it's been!

That's the joy of digital. With a teribyte drive its almost an endless amount of space for pictures. Keep them organized and you can skip the intervention.

I have realized that I am definitely an image hoarder. Argh.
