Well, I had this all written up, hit "start topic," and everything went blank. So, here I go again!
Thanks to everyone who voted for my "on camera flash" entry! :)
For the record, the following "rules" have been explored:
Rule of Thirds
Focus
Exposure
On-Camera Flash
(if there's one I missed, let me know...trying to create a list we can keep going on these original threads so we don't duplicate!)
This breaking the rules challenge will be about lens flare. "Avoiding lens flare" seems to be a rule that is more often broken than followed, but I digress. It's pretty. It's magical. It's romantic....IF you use it correctly.
HERE is a brief article on what lens flare is, and why it happens.
HERE is an article with 5 tips on how to make it happen.
Here is a photo from my project with natural lens flare:
This contest is about using lens flare in a good and intentional manner. Use lens flare to accentuate the mood of your photo. It can work with everything from portratis to nature, so get creative! Remember, this is about creating and capturing WITH YOUR CAMERA. Please do NOT add lens flare effects in post-process.
You can create/capture lens flare with any camera and with any lens. I have iPhone camera pictures with lens flare. It can be done!! :)
Fine print:
(1) Contest begins today and ends Feb 8th @ 23:59 GMT. Don't know what time that is where you live? Check it out HERE! GMT is Greenwich Mean Time.
(2) For consideration in this contest, entries must be taken and posted during the contest period and tagged with btr-flare.
(3) If you prefer NOT to use this contest as inspiration for your daily project, you may POST the photo entry to any date on your calendar, as long as the EXIF shows the capture date to be within the contest dates.
You can share your images in this discussion thread by copying the code below "SHARE" on your project photo page and pasting it in the discussion box here.
@lauralatham I would say that's lens flare, the portion of the grass and the trees that seem to be kind rainbow-ish. It's also very over-exposed, so the lens flare is difficult to see, so keep that in mind! Check out the links I posted in the contest details for more info :)
Was looking around some derelict buildings, and this caught my eye growing on a tree just outside one of them. On the full size version you can see tiny specks in the fungus itself illuminated by the low winter sun.
We haven't had much sun this week to give this a go. I took these a week ago and haven't had many opportunities since to play. Hopefully this week will be better with a very sunny forcast!!
I completely missed the challenge. A pity because I love playing with flare and I have several in my album. OK, by accident I have one that could qualify for the challenge, so I just tagged it:
Too bad I can't use any from yesterday, I had some classics! ;) I'll be on the lookout for more opportunities.
@pwallis lol you love flares and you love to break the rules :)
At least I got another picture of my baby ignoring me and running from the camera... cause I surely don't have enough of those! lol

Not for the contest but I just found some old subtle flare...
