Hey, just a reminder that tomorrow is the Roll in a day / A day in a roll challenge on Flickr. So maybe link your Flickr sets here if you are going to be participating. Also if you have been tempted by all the film awsomeness on this site, why not use this challenge to give it a go.
More details here, and thanks to @beautifulthing for the original post regarding this.
Also tomorrow happens to be Record Store Day as well, so maybe ditch your "Jesus Phone" etc. for the day and go seek out and support you local indy record store, they are out there and pretty cool places to shop in.
Just as an aside, some of you out there may want to use it as a practice day for the world pinhole event coming up next week....two birds with one stone and all! I'm sure I will be if I can get my pinhole camera done in time!
@38mm Aw!! I was JUST thinking a reminder was in order. I am stupid excited for Roll In A Day. I am going to take my Mamiya, because it was the 'first' (non-Holga) film camera I ever bought, and to continue in the thrifty theme, I'm using a lens and film that I bought at thrift too. My goal is to shoot, develop, and upload by the end of the day tomorrow, so we'll see!
And I am STOKED that it is Record Store Day - I was only just last night browsing the selection at Goodwill and thinking I needed to get some new vinyl in the collection.
Tomorrow will be the BEST DAY EVER! :)
ETA: I also just got a lovely order in from B&H - including my first slide film:
I bet if you poked a tiny hole in a peice of pop can with a pin and then taped that over the lens (super tape to make it light tight) and covered any other viewfinder type openings it would work, would just have to make a shutter for the hole to keep it a true pinhole! Set to bulb, press shutter release, open self made shutter, expose, close self made shutter, press shutter release or however you need to take it off of bulb, advance film.....just be careful when you open and close your self made shutter....since the internal shutter is already open you might get some blurriness on the film if you really bump the camera.
@justeddie Oh, yes, true! :) But, you might join the group on Flickr and keep an eye out for the next date, maybe by then you'll be ready to give it a go!
@beautifulthing How often do they do them? I'm going to ask some technical help in a minute but I'll stick it in my other post just to save jamming this or the board up with more of my questions.
@justeddie I think last month's was the first, and it was a huge success, so they scheduled another. Right now, that's putting them at about one a month.
@chewyteeth I've never tried pinhole - and I'll do anything once! :) I'll probably shoot a couple of rolls tomorrow - I am trying to limit myself to the one because of the 'challenge' but I have my new film in and I'm excited to try it.
@beautifulthing@bobfoto@38mm@chewyteeth@sdpace@shadesofgrey Just out of interest, roughly how much film are you guys shooting, say per week month, however you want to work it. I know my biggest restricting factor is going to be cost and I will have to set a budget for it without a doubt or it will get silly!
@justeddie I shoot a lot, like a lot a lot. I can easily shoot 2-3 rolls a day on the weekend and then at least 1-2 through the week. I'm trying to get a little bit more structured about it, though, to make the most of my money.
@justeddie
My Asda does developing for £2.00 a film. and 80p a CD, so I can put three film through and it would cost £6.80.
I just got 9 rolls of colour film and a fujifilm point and shoot camera off ebay for £4.50. Basically I'd feel guilty if I shot more than 4 rolls in a week. But I like to photograph people and I am shooting mainly in digital for that at the moment.
@justeddie I've only been getting a bit of temp work since being laid off, so can really only afford 1 roll a week, but sometimes will do 2. I try and get 36 exp films off ebay as my lab charges the same for 36 as it does a 24 roll
@38mm
Tell me about it, I'm clocking up the redundancies over the last few years, but because of Asda I like shooting film, really you can get dirt cheap stuff off eBay, never buy fresh film, and get it in bulk, expect to spend about 12-18 quid for 10 rolls of film. Never use Jessops is my only advice. I'd fund terrorism before I gave my money to Jessops. Try freecycle dude, get an advert on there saying you'll pick up peoples unused film cameras, and any old expired film they have, I got 2 carrier bags.
@justeddie
if you search film you'll get film for about £1.50-£1.80 a roll (expired) but if you search cameras and use the bundled items button and search for those with film you often get numpties throwing in film for free not realising its worth more than the crappy cameras.
@chewyteeth Thank you for that little gem, I'm on the look out for cheap cameras to give to friends and relatives with used film in just to see what I get back, kind of like film swapping but without the swap!
I've been lucking out and finding a lot of film at thrift lately, too. Most of the time, they can't sell it for love or money so it's super cheap. Not too long ago I got a big box of film and a Nikon for $6. :D
@chewyteeth where do you live, I want all that shit haha I have a spare room so am thinking long term plans to get a B&W enlarger and what not down there,
@chewyteeth Yeah the asda near me dosent do film processing, the 2 labs in town both charge £7 a film. I got banned from my freecycle group for re-posting to much :) Internet peeps just always seem to wanna ban me ;)
@justeddie I'm in Manchester, I got everything but the chemicals, I got an enlarger on ebay now for the last 6 days its up tomorrow and I got 4 watchers but I doubt I'll get any bids because I've set the price at £12. Its missing a couple of 35mm lenses though, which would cost about £7, seriously freecycle, you can mention darkroom equipment, you'll get it I'm sure. keep me updated on how you do. They like it if you give something away at the same time.
@chewyteeth I never get a response to wanted ads on there I always get takers though!! I've had a few bits of camping gear from freecycle but nothing photographic
@38mm If its any consolation, I don't think i'll stretch to any more than that and I'm working, I think the bulk buy idea is a good idea, I'll probably see what I can get for around the tenner mark and then I'll be checking all Asda's out until I find that £2.80 deal
@chewyteeth I'm looking at your kit list, are the Praktica's PK? I know the older ones were screw mount.
Now there is an adapter I would like (PK 2 M42) but a real Pentax one would be great, I saw one on ebay this week but I don't have any pennys in the photography pot yet!!
@justeddie The Asda store locator allows you to filter (after you have put in a post code) on those that have a photo department, I assume that means ones that do processing http://storelocator.asda.com/#!/
My nearest one is 40 miles away, but I live in the ass end of nowhere
@38mm Cool, I have a few located around me, I'll make use of that when I sort my head out, I've had four hours sleep so I'm just gonna drag myself through today as best as I can lol
@38mm I have one just a short drive or ride away from me that does photo processing,I am seriously contemplating rinsing my first film off in a day now haha!
@justeddie
yep the old MTL range of Prakticas are M42 screw mount like Yashicas and a load of others like the Pentax honeywell oldies. But my BX20 is PB, Praktica bayonet, from the 80s and90s. I sold my MTL50. If I was you I wouldn't worry about getting adptor rings for your Vivtar, what there is in PK range lenses you won't really beat as far as SLR lenses go. You can get a M42 ring adaptor for your 1100D for a few quid. I have two lens systems PK and PB and I use the PB mostly, especially the 50mm and 28mm but sadly the ring adaptor not fitting well is typical and its a bitch to focus.
@chewyteeth I didn't say it shouldn't be but its the cheapest there is and he has knocked a quid off that because it didn't sell the first time around. Sometimes cheap isn't good sometimes cheap is better. I just thought I'd look for an informed opinion before spending more money. ;)
Until recently I didn't even know what a light meter was or how you measured light, so I wouldn't have a clue, I looked on ebay and they range from that to hundreds and I was lost!
@justeddie well I've got cameras that cost me virtually nothing which have built in light meters which run off a watch battery, so I guess the technology is pretty simple so I wouldn't pay a lot. Looks the part to me, what do you need it for, your vivitar?
@justeddie I have no idea to be honest as I have never used a real one, I did have one on my old phone but never installed another when I replaced my phone. I quite fancy getting a Weston Master though, simply cos they look cool, they usually go fairly cheap on ebay as well.
@beautifulthing Well done Shelly, it was fun sharing the day w/you! I can hardly wait to post mine tomorrow; though they won't tell a great story like yours.
@grizzlysghost Well, I think that if this story had a subtitle, it would be "My damn finger slips too much and wastes about four shots on every roll". Ha! But thank you. It was a good day - breakfast and records and sammiches and records. Can't want for much more.
Damn sunday hours, I finish work at three so I thought I'd hop off the train at Newcastle , rinse a roll of b&w through the Rangefinder and then hop on a train to the nearest Asda for 1 hour processing.. Not "Today Hose'ay" every other day till 10pm, today its 4 :(
@justeddie you got a developing ASDA, lucky boy, let the cheap film shooting begin. I'll give you a heads up if I see any cheap colour film going. (ASDA won't develop black and white or slide, mine doesn't anyway)
@chewyteeth Balls haha I shot in B&W, Mind you, I only got 18 frames, its much harder than I thought. Had I been out with my digital i'd probably be sifting through 100 plus images now. AND, I scored myself a trip out in a vintage Sunbeam to take pictures on location today :)
Speaking of cheap film our Poundland are stocking kodak color 200 now so I picked three up while I was passing.
I am making my pinhole camera from the kit I got for Christmas :oD I will be ready! Wondering if I should use it before the 29th and then post a shot on the 29th or wait until the 29th to use it but then I won't be able to post on the 29th as I will have to get the film developed. A dilemma???
that guy on ebay is crossprocessing 120 for £4.75 by the looks of it, I just sold all my 120 film and my 120 cameras because Jessops wanted 9 a time. gutted. He must be a Jessops employee doing some after hours developing. Great find Eddie
@chewyteeth I don't know what is more gutting, £22 Or having just sold your gear and then finding that. I'm surprised you haven't spotted it yourself.. I did a search for cameras with film as you suggested but didn't find any really, not cheapos at any rate.
@justeddie@chewyteeth One of you 2 looking for a K Mount lens? I have a 75-300mm if you want it. I think it's k mount anyway, fits my vivitar but I'm never gonna use it.
@chewyteeth I'm watching that to see what it goes for.. for colour its poundland for now! I have four and a half rolls to use so I'm ok for the minute. I need to stop spending though, at least for a short while. I want 3 rolls of Ilford B&W and I'm gonna need processing money on top of all of that. My budget is set at £500 a year which breaks down to about £9 a week, I've spent £25 this last week and I'll be adding more to that soon. I'm going to need rehab if I carry on!
@chewyteeth Honest and straight to the point. Its wank! I like it. I just saw a Kodak APS camera for a couple of quid including postage and wondered what the deal was.
Right guys I am getting a confused with holding film related chats with people here across various thread, photos so I have created a Flickr group you can join should you be so inclined. I have invited a couple of people so far but I don't have you all as Flickr contacts, so if you havent received an invite the URL is ....... http://www.flickr.com/groups/365filmclub/
@38mm Have joined already. I am so easy. Accept an invite to anything. Sadly missed roll in a day, day, cos read about it with only two minutes left in that day to go.
@beautifulthing Woo HOO. Bought myself a neat travel tripod yesterday. It is super light weight and looks like a spider. Camnt wat for OM-10 to arrive. There is a Yashica Elelectro Im watching
@peterdegraaff My Yashica Electro makes me sad - even with a new battery, the light meter/exposure stuff doesn't work. Apparently it's a wiring/circuitry issue.
@beautifulthing That is why I am getting another OM. My lovely OM-1 light meter doesn't work and would cost $150 to fix. Might still get done and recalibrated to 1.5v. Still the Sekonic light meter was cheap at only $14.99
Dumb question maybe. Is it OK to post my film in a day shots on thursday? I got flat out busy today and did not get a chance to develop my film. Public Holiday tomorrow, so the earliest I can get it done is thurs. Is that alright? Or am I missing the point?
@noo Yeah post whenever, the Flickr group is more a place for us Film heads to post any film pics / have discussions not just the "roll in a day" thing. Just thought it would be easier then having discussions etc. on here :)
@38mm Ahh OK I just sent a request through flickr so You should get the notification now. I am poor too at the moment and just cant afford the lens for my mamiya RZ that I need. I have a 120 back and a polaroid back for that one, just waiting to fire up. Its the only good vintage I have that is not going. sigh......
@38mm LOL Yoda.... I have taken a lot of cars. But planes, trains and bikes are popping up for me as well. Its just something I have always done, Im a bit of a motorhead......

Now back to the Roll in a day concept!
Just buzzing the people that I could think of, off the top of my head, that either might be doing it or might wanna do it.
off to the world of pinhole cameraness, on the pinhole train of unhappiness?
stopping at 'dissapointing' - 'out of focus' - 'blurred and dark' and pinhole camera'.
all aboard!
PS I can soooooo shoot a roll of film tomorrow and upload it! ;)

Right guys I need Z's and Flickr seems to be broken for me now, so post up ya sets here when you have em and stuff.
Maybe we need to set up a 365 Film Club on Flickr?
Speaking of cheap film our Poundland are stocking kodak color 200 now so I picked three up while I was passing.
£1 a roll I presume? poundland.......tomorrow's job
that guy on ebay is crossprocessing 120 for £4.75 by the looks of it, I just sold all my 120 film and my 120 cameras because Jessops wanted 9 a time. gutted. He must be a Jessops employee doing some after hours developing. Great find Eddie

would these be pk lenses/pk camera? 2 rolls of film and 3 lenses and a sweet bag.
What about the smena? I think you'd love it but most of them are in the Eastern Bloc so postage would be high.
Ok, posted mine; here is the link to the conversation on Flickr, my links are in the thread. I have THREE sets :)
