Technique Challenge #14 - Multiplicity

October 6th, 2013
Ready for some fun, creativity and perhaps to learn something new? So what is a technique challenge? The host challenger selects a specific “technique” to try. It may be brand new for some, or just a challenge to be creative for others. Techniques may include high/low key, macro, portraits, landscapes, abstracts, the possibilities are endless. It could even be specific techniques in processing.

I'm ecstatic to learn that my photo 'Message from God' won the technique challenge - Zoom Burst. There is a reason for my overwhelmed joy. I love technique challenges, I've been participating since #6 - Professional Looking Portraits, and haven't missed a single one since then. Ironically, I also came in top 5 in each one of those challenges, came in very close to winning a few, but haven't won until now. I have a technique in mind that I want us all to try for a long time, which is also a reason for my desperation of wanting to win this challenge.

The technique is 'MULTIPLICITY'. I'm for some reason fascinated by this technique and all the different concepts that can be conceived from this. I only did one picture using this technique so far for the multiple exposure challenge, I haven't had a chance to play with it a lot until now. I'm going to fix it now with this opportunity of hosting and playing along.

Here's the info on what it is, and a few links to help on how to:

Multiplicity is a photography technique where you take multiple images of the same subject in different parts of the same frame, then combine them digitally to create a photo with multiple different images of the same person, animal, or object in the same setting. This is also called sequence photography when it's used in sports.

I understand this looks like a complicated technique for many but I promise it is not. You can combine anywhere from 2 to 20 images, it doesn't need to be selfies if you are not into that kind of thing, it can be your kid, pet, anybody who is a willing subject. If you have ever done overlay in PS or any processing program, you are good to go to try this. This will be a chance to sharpen your precision on brushing and erasing skills which will be useful countless number of times in your 'learning to post-process perfectly' journey. So, I really hope you all will give this technique a try.

Here's my photo and I'll look out for other pictures here on 365 and post them here for inspiration:

Looks fun. Does it require Photoshop? If you have recommendations beyond that using publicly available software, that would probably increase the number of submissions.

Great technique challenge. I tried it for the first time just last week, and had a lot of fun, and frustration doing it. This challenge is perfect for me to have another go!
October 6th, 2013
@taffy Yes, it does require some kind of editing software. The second link above has instructions on how to do it in a free software called 'pixlr', that's why I included it. I totally agree with your suggestion and will keep a lookout for instructions of other softwares.

Anybody who are good at gimp and other softwares, please feel free to provide instructions on this thread on how to do it.

@onie_m Leonie, you did fantastic. Can't believe it was your first time. Your masking and erasing looks perfect and I also like how you included the shadow on the wall. The concept is great as well. Thanks for posting it here and hope you'll give it another shot for the challenge.

Here are some examples from fellow 365ers which are better examples than mine:

@chanchiawei

@lynne5477

@theadventuresofbart

@lenimiss

@seasofrhye

Check out the tag multiplicity for other wonderful examples, and of course google images.

@ikamera Thanks! I had trouble getting the second link to open. I'll go back to it and see if I can get it to work. Definitely a fun challenge!
October 6th, 2013
Hmmm... It's opening fine for me. Please try again and let me know. @taffy
October 6th, 2013
@ikamera Yep -- got it to open and your directions are great!
October 7th, 2013
Does it have to be people - could you use teddy bears or ornaments?
October 7th, 2013
This is such a fun technique! I did this one a while ago, but I might have to try another one for this challenge.
October 7th, 2013
This is a crazy technique I've never tried before, going to take a look and possibly try lol
October 7th, 2013
@la_photographic You most certainly can use any subject, check out the examples above for a teddy bear one.
October 7th, 2013
@egad That's a great example. Thanks for posting. Concept is great and the execution is so perfect that it is very believable. Hope you are ready to have another round of fun for the challenge. :-)
October 7th, 2013
@shawnasays Shawna, do try. It IS a lot of fun. Try with just two of you first if you are intimidated by this technique.
October 7th, 2013
Fun technique! Here's my first try from a couple of months ago...

Might have to try it again.
October 7th, 2013
I've done a few but here's my two faves of my project. I might just have to join in on this one!

October 7th, 2013
@nadaa Nada, that's a lot of hands and legs overlapping. Yet, you did a great job with it. Awesome.
October 7th, 2013
@steampowered Paul, that's a great set-up for a water splash shot. Lol. Love the second one, too. Thank you so much for posting them here. It'll be awesome if you could participate.
October 7th, 2013
Oh I've sort of tried multiplicity but I never had a shot I thought was a great example of it so I am excited to learn this one. Thanks for hosting it.
October 7th, 2013
@myhrhelper Kathy, glad you are planning to join in. Looking forward to see what you come up with.
October 7th, 2013
@ikamera I actually have a great idea if my 11 year old cooperates lol
October 7th, 2013
@shawnasays Shawna, does she like chocolate? :-)
October 7th, 2013
I am looking forward to participating in this challenge. Very exciting. Looking for a free software that will let me do layering..
October 7th, 2013
@smithak Check out the second link in my original post for instructions on how to do it in pixlr, a free software. Glad you are joining. I'm excited too to see what you will conjure. :-)
October 7th, 2013
@ikamera she's a girl and....she's a girl lol she loves chocolate and any other form of candy or sugary substance lol and great minds think a like because I got some candy from Walmart earlier today lol.
October 7th, 2013
@smithak I use paint.net for some of my layering. Also, the 2nd link listed above (original post) talks about a free site you can use called pixlr and even offers a tutorial mid way down the page after you click on the above link.
October 7th, 2013
@shawnasays @ikamera thank you both. Will look at both paint.net and pixir. Very exciting..
October 8th, 2013
Deb
This is one of my favorite techniques! I've used an app (on my iPad) called Superimpose to edit my multiplicity shots. I'm looking forward to entering this challenge!
October 8th, 2013
@deburahiru deb, glad you are joining in.

I'm too excited to wait for all the entries to come in. Lol.
October 8th, 2013
Many can play at this game ;-)

October 10th, 2013
October 10th, 2013
@mikegifford Mike, I remember this one. We played tag with the Victorian headless portraits. I'm counting on you to do something fun and new for this theme as well.
October 10th, 2013
@northy I saw your frustration on this one in your post, but based on your title I think it's a success. Even though it may not be what you envisioned, it sends the message across just fine. Thanks for your entry.
October 10th, 2013
@ikamera The pressure is on....hmmmm
October 11th, 2013
Here is my very first attempt... quite fun and my first 365 selfie :)

October 12th, 2013
@emmasteil Emma, really cool multiplicity shot. It looks like it's triplets. You did fantastic for your first attempt, very believable. And first 365 selfie too... Awesome.

Wearing something neutral and just changing up the outfit and hair like removing the cardigan in one, wearing hair up in the other etc., might have made it even better. Just what popped in my head when I looked at this pic, please don't take this as a critique or feedback or anything, I'm not qualified to do that, I don't even have a good multiplicity example like this. :-)

October 12th, 2013
This was my 1st attempt almost exactly a year ago! It might be time to try again

October 12th, 2013
@sunshinephoto5 Dawn, great photo. I really like how the light and dark areas in the room bring out the dimension and mood. Want one for the challenge from you as well. :-)
October 12th, 2013
@ikamera thanks for the suggestions. I must admit, I was too lazy to change clothes but may try it again! I've done another shot today with a different model :)
October 14th, 2013
These are so cool! I'm hoping I get a chance to do one of these too but it won't be a selife!
October 17th, 2013
Here is my attempt :o)

October 17th, 2013
@beluga Great photo. You nailed it. Thanks for entering.

October 17th, 2013
We got some great entries so far. There are still some who expressed interest in this technique but haven't had a chance to try it yet, including myself. Well, in my defense, I am out of town. :-) I know this takes both time and energy to take multiple shots and process to layer them into a single shot. Maybe the time I've set on this one(10 days) is not enough for these type of shots, so I'm thinking of extending the deadline for this competition to include one more weekend until Oct, 22nd, Tuesday. @la_photographic @egad @shawnasays @smithak @deburahiru @sunshinephoto5 @myhrhelper @steampowered Are you all still interested in trying out this technique? What's your opinion on extending the deadline? Would that give you enough time, you think?
October 17th, 2013
Yes. The extension would be great as I am using a film camera and am waiting to finish my film. It would need to be next week as if I get the film finished by tomorrow it will be Monday before I will get the photos back so Tuesday might be a bit early as I can't upload images until Thursday's or the weekend.
October 17th, 2013
Deb
Here is my entry. Extension would be great to give others a chance to try.
October 17th, 2013
@ikamera I think the extension is a great idea. I have to think about what I can do that DOES NOT involve a selfie too.
October 17th, 2013
@ikamera that would be great, I haven't been able to try it yet, busy and bad weather don't help lol I really do want to try it though, atleast once.
October 17th, 2013
@ikamera I have the idea in my head. Just need time to try it out. If the deadline extension would help. Thank you.
October 19th, 2013
@deburahiru Deb, nice picture. You executed it really well. Thanks for entering.
October 19th, 2013
@la_photographic @egad @shawnasays @smithak @deburahiru @sunshinephoto5 @myhrhelper @steampowered

Extended deadline for submission to this challenge until October 26th considering the feedback.. That is a week with a weekend in between which should be plenty of time for those who would like to try out this technique. looking forward for the entries.
