Ready for some fun, creativity and perhaps to learn something new? So what is a technique challenge? The host challenger selects a specific “technique” to try. It may be brand new for some, or just a challenge to be creative for others. Techniques may include high/low key, macro, portraits, landscapes, abstracts, the possibilities are endless. It could even be specific techniques in processing.
I'm ecstatic to learn that my photo 'Message from God' won the technique challenge - Zoom Burst. There is a reason for my overwhelmed joy. I love technique challenges, I've been participating since #6 - Professional Looking Portraits, and haven't missed a single one since then. Ironically, I also came in top 5 in each one of those challenges, came in very close to winning a few, but haven't won until now. I have a technique in mind that I want us all to try for a long time, which is also a reason for my desperation of wanting to win this challenge.
The technique is 'MULTIPLICITY'. I'm for some reason fascinated by this technique and all the different concepts that can be conceived from this. I only did one picture using this technique so far for the multiple exposure challenge, I haven't had a chance to play with it a lot until now. I'm going to fix it now with this opportunity of hosting and playing along.
Here's the info on what it is, and a few links to help on how to:
Multiplicity is a photography technique where you take multiple images of the same subject in different parts of the same frame, then combine them digitally to create a photo with multiple different images of the same person, animal, or object in the same setting. This is also called sequence photography when it's used in sports.
I understand this looks like a complicated technique for many but I promise it is not. You can combine anywhere from 2 to 20 images, it doesn't need to be selfies if you are not into that kind of thing, it can be your kid, pet, anybody who is a willing subject. If you have ever done overlay in PS or any processing program, you are good to go to try this. This will be a chance to sharpen your precision on brushing and erasing skills which will be useful countless number of times in your 'learning to post-process perfectly' journey. So, I really hope you all will give this technique a try.
Here's my photo and I'll look out for other pictures here on 365 and post them here for inspiration:

Now for the important logistics:
Challenge starts Monday, October 7th and lasts until October 26th. Voting will take place October 27th-29th with the winner announced on the 30th of October.
Tag all your entries 'TECHNIQUE14'.
Check out all the awesome entries so far by clicking on TECHNIQUE14
All photos must be taken within the challenge dates. Enter as many as you would like. Voting will last about 3 days. The winner will host a new challenge (or get someone else to host it).
Constructive & kind feedback is encouraged. Feel free to share tips, suggestions or how you were able to get the terrific photo you did. Posting your photo on this thread is encouraged but not required.
I request people who have successfully tried and use this technique all the time provide tips and help us anyway you can.
Looks fun. Does it require Photoshop? If you have recommendations beyond that using publicly available software, that would probably increase the number of submissions.
Great technique challenge. I tried it for the first time just last week, and had a lot of fun, and frustration doing it. This challenge is perfect for me to have another go!
@taffy Yes, it does require some kind of editing software. The second link above has instructions on how to do it in a free software called 'pixlr', that's why I included it. I totally agree with your suggestion and will keep a lookout for instructions of other softwares.
Anybody who are good at gimp and other softwares, please feel free to provide instructions on this thread on how to do it.
@onie_m Leonie, you did fantastic. Can't believe it was your first time. Your masking and erasing looks perfect and I also like how you included the shadow on the wall. The concept is great as well. Thanks for posting it here and hope you'll give it another shot for the challenge.
@egad That's a great example. Thanks for posting. Concept is great and the execution is so perfect that it is very believable. Hope you are ready to have another round of fun for the challenge. :-)
@steampowered Paul, that's a great set-up for a water splash shot. Lol. Love the second one, too. Thank you so much for posting them here. It'll be awesome if you could participate.
Oh I've sort of tried multiplicity but I never had a shot I thought was a great example of it so I am excited to learn this one. Thanks for hosting it.
@smithak Check out the second link in my original post for instructions on how to do it in pixlr, a free software. Glad you are joining. I'm excited too to see what you will conjure. :-)
@ikamera she's a girl and....she's a girl lol she loves chocolate and any other form of candy or sugary substance lol and great minds think a like because I got some candy from Walmart earlier today lol.
@smithak I use paint.net for some of my layering. Also, the 2nd link listed above (original post) talks about a free site you can use called pixlr and even offers a tutorial mid way down the page after you click on the above link.
This is one of my favorite techniques! I've used an app (on my iPad) called Superimpose to edit my multiplicity shots. I'm looking forward to entering this challenge!
@mikegifford Mike, I remember this one. We played tag with the Victorian headless portraits. I'm counting on you to do something fun and new for this theme as well.
@northy I saw your frustration on this one in your post, but based on your title I think it's a success. Even though it may not be what you envisioned, it sends the message across just fine. Thanks for your entry.
@emmasteil Emma, really cool multiplicity shot. It looks like it's triplets. You did fantastic for your first attempt, very believable. And first 365 selfie too... Awesome.
Wearing something neutral and just changing up the outfit and hair like removing the cardigan in one, wearing hair up in the other etc., might have made it even better. Just what popped in my head when I looked at this pic, please don't take this as a critique or feedback or anything, I'm not qualified to do that, I don't even have a good multiplicity example like this. :-)
@sunshinephoto5 Dawn, great photo. I really like how the light and dark areas in the room bring out the dimension and mood. Want one for the challenge from you as well. :-)
@ikamera thanks for the suggestions. I must admit, I was too lazy to change clothes but may try it again! I've done another shot today with a different model :)
We got some great entries so far. There are still some who expressed interest in this technique but haven't had a chance to try it yet, including myself. Well, in my defense, I am out of town. :-) I know this takes both time and energy to take multiple shots and process to layer them into a single shot. Maybe the time I've set on this one(10 days) is not enough for these type of shots, so I'm thinking of extending the deadline for this competition to include one more weekend until Oct, 22nd, Tuesday. @la_photographic@egad@shawnasays@smithak@deburahiru@sunshinephoto5@myhrhelper@steampowered Are you all still interested in trying out this technique? What's your opinion on extending the deadline? Would that give you enough time, you think?
Yes. The extension would be great as I am using a film camera and am waiting to finish my film. It would need to be next week as if I get the film finished by tomorrow it will be Monday before I will get the photos back so Tuesday might be a bit early as I can't upload images until Thursday's or the weekend.
Extended deadline for submission to this challenge until October 26th considering the feedback.. That is a week with a weekend in between which should be plenty of time for those who would like to try out this technique. looking forward for the entries.

Check out the tag multiplicity for other wonderful examples, and of course google images.
Might have to try it again.
I'm too excited to wait for all the entries to come in. Lol.
