CSC-37-Ghostly settings

November 27th, 2013
Just a reminder: the camera settings challenge CSC-37Ghostly starts in a few hours and runs for ten days. Looking forward to seeing some holiday spirits.

Do some of the camera settings intimidate you? Do you want to learn how to develop your photography skills and learn how to use your camera effectively without always going back to the “auto” function? These challenges are for you!

It's almost time for the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come, and I thought we should have a bit of ghostly fun of our own. So, this week’s challenge is: Ghostly Settings.

Explanation: Your challenge this week is to take a shot with a transparent or flowing figure. This is done using a slow shutter speed, 10 seconds or longer, with low light. Your model (or yourself) holds still for 5 seconds or so and then quickly moves out of frame. It may take some practice to get the look you want, but once you have your timing down it's time to get creative.

Additional Tips: Use a tripod, and either shutter priority or manual with a high f-stop.

Here's a ghostly selfie of mine. This was a 15 second exposure at f16. As I recall, I used the 10 second delay so I could get in frame, sat still for about 7 or 8 seconds after the shutter opened, then rushed out of frame.

This challenge starts Friday, November 29 and ends Midnight, Mountain Standard Time, Sunday, December 8 (06:00 Dec 9 Zulu Time - I think I converted that correctly). All photos must be taken during these dates to be considered. Enter as many as you would like- the idea is to practice & learn. Tag your photo CSC-37-Ghostly and post your picture in this thread if you'd like.

How to post your photo on this link:
1) Go to your page that has the photo you wish to post.
2) Copy the “share” code in the bottom right section of that page.
3) Return to this thread and paste the code under comments

Stretch your skills and have fun!

Great! Here's a recent post about how I made the shoot below using slow sync and flash. No digital manipulation needed. http://www.boostyourphotography.com/2013/11/slow-sync.html

@archaeofrog Thank you Katie. I will be checking exif info to see if I can pick up any hints on how to improve my ghostly settings.

These are such fun! I've done several - although it's been a while... Here's a couple from last year...

@northy These are so neat, and the first one is filled with starbursts too! Thank you for sharing.

@adayinmallacoota Great first try. I think if you have a slightly longer exposure, say another 2-3 seconds, with a little less time in frame you will become more transparent. Looking forward to second try!

@ninadumlao Nice try! I see just a hint of you and I like how your hair bleeds off into the background.

@bill_fe This is great! I like how your ghostly figure disappears into the darkness of the cabinet and how this aperture setting brings out the light burst in the candles.

My first attempt. I posted a few more from this photo session on my flickr page. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mluschen/)

@mlulu191 I like the transparency of your arm with the seemingly more solid hand. I looked at your flickr too...really good first attempts!

Not so much ghostly as... melted, or merged, or something:
