Learn To Shoot Macros With Us ~ Part 2

February 29th, 2016
This is the second part of learning to shoot macro photographs. For this week, read the chapters 8 -27 of the online book below:

www.macro-photography.org.

Might seem like a lot of chapters but some of the information will not be relevant to your situation. Chapter 8 explains diffraction. Chapter 9 takes you thru the best shutter speeds for your lens. Chapter 10 discusses camera shake and mirror lockup. Chapters 11 & 12 walk you thru lighting for macro photography. In chapter 13 there are different techniques discussed that you might try and some helpful tips on set up.

Heres where the information starts to change and you may only skim certain sections. Chapters 14-16 talk about different macro lens, their best use and some helpful information about lens specifications. Chapters 17-24 discuss alternatives to macro lenses and how to shoot macros without a macro lens. Chapters 25-26 tour on using flash to create better light. And chapter 27 is specific to how to take macros at an aquarium.

This second learning challenge will run from Tuesday, March 1 through Monday, March 7. For this week, pay attention to your shutter speed and light. If you've only been shooting indoors, try heading outdoors to shoot. If you've only been using a tripod, try hand held and see what your results are. Or try shooting with your mirror locked or with a flash. What works...what doesn't? Let us know!

Tag your photos macros-2016 and feel free to also post them here to inspire others to join us! To see all of the entries use this link

After this second week, I'd like to set up an ongoing fun macro challenge. I was thinking we could shoot macros with a challenge of a technique or theme followed by the selection of finalists and voting.

I hope this will be an interactive and helpful forum with people offering tips, advice or suggestions. I have to say, I was originally worried that no one would respond to my challenge but as you can see we have grown into a sizable group! If you would like to be included in the list going forward please reply to this post and I'll include you. If anyone out there feels they have more knowledge than me please feel free to offer your expertise! I am not a macro expert and prior to this challenge I was feeling like I really did not understand my macro lens and how it worked! I get it now and I am so excited to continue practicing with it! I hope you have learned something too!!

@dianen Thought I might jump in from this week to practice a few macros techniques (without a dedicated macro lens) but the online macro book has some useful hints regardless.
