NEXT B&W CHALLENGE: SHADOW !!

November 14th, 2017
Thank you so much for choosing my picture as a winner of the BW-20 challenge! I am very much honored, and happy. Big thanks also to these girls in Niamey who offered their smiles so spontaneously and generously. It was a very nice experience walking the street of this sahélian city full of colours.

As next Black and White challenge, I would like to propose a classical theme: SHADOW

Rules for the challenge:

1. Photos must be taken and posted within the timeframe of the challenge.
2. And all images must be black & white.

Please tag images: bw-21
You can put your images on this post as well.
And you can check the entry here: bw-21 tag

Challenge starts on November 15, 2017 and closes on December 3, 2017. (That’s when i will return home after my holidays...). Don’t worry about time zone…I’ll give it a day for us all to catch up!

There are numerous nice example of black and white image playing with shadows. A google-image search with the key words “black and white shadow photography” will give you lots of example.

Please do not confuse “shadow” and “silhouette”!! Here is a nice article explaining the difference and giving some nice examples (not all in black and white) of photos with shadows:

Here are some other nice examples:

And I do not resist referring to pictures from two of my preferred photographers,

Joseph Koudelka:

And Rene Burri:

Or you can just search for “shadow” tag. On the 365-project website, and you will find many examples (not all in B&W).

So good luck! For those in the northern hemisphere, take benefit of the low sun (for the few sunny days, you might get in the coming 20 days), or play with interior lights. For those in the summer hemisphere (where i am currently), take benefit of spring time, the longer day light, and people returning in the street after the winter time).

And have fun. I'm really looking forward to see your contributions.
