Winner of Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner Challenge 1.

May 10th, 2021

It is congratulations to Chris Cook ( @cdcook48 ), who is the winner of the first Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner challenge.

Many thanks to all members who took part and voted in this challenge. It is now over to you Chris, to host the next round. When I first set up this challenge there were a number of suggestions as to how this challenge should evolve either in the form of remaining generic food photographs or targeting specific areas of food photography. I look forward to seeing how this develops.

Finally again my congratulations to Chris and I hand over the baton to you to host the next round.

John.

Wow! I’m honoured. I will take a day or two to consider what form the next challenge should take and then get it started.

@cdcook48

That is great and again congratulations.

As far as your photograph; how did you do it? Obviously focus stacking, but how did you go about taking your photographs.

Thanks

John

@cdcook48 Congrats Chris, a pretty amazing image! I too would be interested to know how you did it ;-)

@lumpiniman, @ludwigsdiana. Smoke and mirrors. lol. Actually no, somewhat more mundane than that although there was no focus stacking involved. This was a technique I had always wanted to try and the BLD challenge gave me the perfect opportunity. I strung some thin wire between two light stands and carefully balanced my props on each layer. It was lit by a single off camera flash at about 45° angle. I took two shots, one with all the props in place and another with the props and wire removed. Then in Photoshop I used a layer mask to carefully remove the visible wire. That part was a bit laborious. When I was finished I ate the props. If you are interested to try it yourself there are a number of YouTube videos on the technique.
