First of all thank you so much for all that voted for my Roy Lichtenstein challenge photo! I feel so honored to have so many talented people just looking at my photographs, much less voting for me in a competition! Thanks so much again and again!
So I tossed around several ideas for the next artist challenge. There have really been some great artists for this challenge in the past. We went from Van Gogh, to Warhol, then to Dali, Munch, and Lichtenstein. Wow! Just wow! We have so many talented people on this site that have participated in these challenges. I look forward to seeing the product of my artist challenge I have for you!
I saw that there was a common theme with the artists that were chosen in the past. This would be that they are all painters. I had a list of about 20 painters I considered using for this challenge..but then I thought, "Why not do a famous photographer instead?"
So there was my other challenge...choosing the perfect photographer...and I thought of Cindy Sherman. Sherman is a well-known American photographer known for her conceptual portraits. Sherman works in series, typically photographing herself in a range of costumes. To create her photographs, Sherman shoots alone in her studio, assuming multiple roles as author, director, make-up artist, hairstylist, wardrobe mistress, and of course, model. (source from wiki) Her photos often look like film stills from actual movies or portraits of the most extreme characters you could possibly think of!
I want you guys to have FUN with this! There are endless possibilities to this challenge!
here is one of her main pages: http://www.cindysherman.com/
or of course you can just google image her name and you will have plenty of photos to view by her! some of my favorites by her are:
And this is an example of something I did for the 365 project that I thought might be a pretty good example for this challenge:

Such an interesting choice! My only concern is how I'm going to do another photographer justice. At least with the painters my work didn't have to look as good as theirs since it was a totally different medium but here I'm going to struggle to get it just right. Wish me luck!
I just had a chance to check out her images online. This is going to be fun. I really don't like doing selfies, so I am thinking of some ways to do this that will be creative and fun.
@omabluebird the great thing about Cindy Sherman is that even though it is a self portrait..you are somewhat in disguise...So you don't have to worry too much about being self-conscious or anything else that comes along with taking a self-portrait. You can just have fun with it! :)
wow this is a great artist !!! I can't wait to try...she has such a dark, mysterious look to all her photos- almost a pessimistic view coming out in her characters. I'd love to try it, especially since my selfies are usually all flower childish...lol. I can't wait!
I gave up on trying to use myself as the model since yesterday's photo shoot was so disastrous. Instead, meet Lola. She will be standing in for me on days when my hair's looking ratty or my arms too fat to photograph.
@alecio How interesting. I'd seen that headline earlier in the week but hadn't realized it was about a Cindy Sherman photo. What interesting timing! I agree with the author's assessment that while it's a neat shot it's not my favorite of hers either. Judging from the talent I've seen here I should just hire one of you to do a Cindy Sherman-esque shot for a fraction of the price.
@sourkraut That is really interesting, I just got home now and once I am done with the photos for the challenge I am going to start looking at the original photos of her. I like that photo, the 3.8 million one, and art is so unpredictable, some people have a gift to choose and invest in art. I saw a documentary other day, The Collector: Dr, Albert C. Barnes (HBO), I really recommend it, and it makes you understand a lot and nothing about why and what to collect when it comes to art. Recently, it was sold a self-portrait of Andy Warhol for $32.6 million, wow, 32.6 million is a lot money right? So, that is why I say, unpredictable.
first entry
first attempt....ooohh..scary...:)
