Advice about cameras with films

April 14th, 2012
Since my camera is broken,I decided to use the old one, with film, that I have since I was little.I used to make a lot of photos, because it was the only one I had.It looks like this: http://images3.okr.ro/auctions.v3/700_700/2011/11/11/e/b/625806981710503863817133-6201282-700_700.jpg S
ince I have only one button,no zoom or other stuff,it's a little awkward to get used to it again.Do you have any advice on how to use it,or what to photograph?

Landscape, colourful things. Skies, trees. I've found since using disposable the focal range is extremely short. Don't get too close to your subject or it's likely to be out of focus.

Use one roll of film to experiment with and shoot different stuff, take a notepad and make notes on each shot like how close / far away you was, what sort of light there was, weather conditions etc. Work out from that what the camera is good and bad at.

Try using 400 Asa film to begin with which can be a bit more versatile

Just take pictures. You will get used to it again. The camera will have limitations, find them and use them. Experiment with different films. Have fun with it.

Have fun with it and try many angles, I look forward to seeing your photos!

@38mm wow. I didn't even think to do all that stuff. I just ran out the door like an idiot with my camera and just started pointing and shooting at everything, lol

@pwallis don't worry,I also didn't thought at that.I'm not sure I'll manage to do this, since I'll have yo pay money for both films, and to put them on cd after:(

@pwallis Yeah I mainly did the notes thing cos my Fujica has to be pre-focus'ed by twisting a ring on the lens to the relevant distance to the subject ,and I had a lot of trouble getting the hang of working out distances at first. And also so I can keep track exposure / aperture settings on each shot, I'm a geek like that :)

@michellina I have a lot of point-and-shoot film cameras like that - they are quite nice to use when you are on the go, because you don't have too many settings to fuss with! I am lucky because, in the city I live in, it's very easy for me to buy film cheaply and get it developed pretty cheaply, which is pretty much the reason I'm able to do about 90% of my photography now on film. I know how expensive it can be in other places - especially since sometimes your first roll or two on a camera don't come out so great! But it will be a good learning experience, fun to do, and a nice change of pace. :)

@pwallis I always forget to take notes - most of the time I don't mind but then there's always the one shot where I nailed it and I wish I could remember what I've done. :) I'm thinking of getting a Nikon F5 - solely because it actually has a memory card on it that records your exif for each shot. How cool is that?

@michellina I don't know where in the world you are but on ebay uk there is a guy who processes films and sends you back the negatives and a disc with the scanned pics on the same day as he receives them from £3. I'm sure where ever you are in the world someone else will be offering this service too.

@justeddie I'm from Romania,a country from Europe, and from here people don't really buy stuff from E-bay,because the transport is quite expensive

@michellina I see, well don't give up just yet. I see film as a way of going back to help you go forwards. Thats how it is in my world anyway.

I have a big sack of these camera, even this one maybe. Be brave, shoot in the street, the countryside, at parties, with your family, (but not inside the house so much its too dark) get some cheap film. In Romania you would get also some cheap Soviet cameras like Feds, Kievs and Zorkys if you wanted to shoot more film.

My tips, don't be afraid to open the back of the camer just 1cm to get some stains and light blurs, shoot with the sun behind your subject, and shoot from low down in the grass. Shoot on the train - from the hip, on the bus, shoot things that are moving. This camera is not perfect so enjoy making some nice mistakes and colourful pictures. Good luck. Let me know when your photos are developed.
