Long Exposure Tutorial

August 17th, 2012
Several people have asked me about my long exposure shots. Since I am no expert, I thought this video would help. I use the same BW 10 stop filter shown in this video and it is a lot of fun.

@jcarrollphotoYou might want to consider a ND fader filter. It's like having several ND filters in one.

@john244 That's great - I have a P&S and spent a while trying to get more than an over-exposed white screen... now I know why! Also had no idea there are so many photography tutorials out there.....! Thanks John

Thanks for posting this! Now I know what that "bulb" setting means! I already have my remote shutter trigger, so I just need to get the filter and sme black tape and I am ready...oh..I need a new camera strap too I think! Mine won't easy release from camera....I never liked it anyway..came with the camera. I hope to try one of these when I get time and a good place to shoot one! Thanks for sharing it!

Thanks for posting this. I've always loved long exposure shots and never knew how to do them. I'm going to give it a shot this weekend.

@john244 I John i would like to ask you a question.I recently got a bw 10 stop filter which ive only used a couple of times but iam not sure if iam using it right.i did every thing like the video and the picture came out white i use a exposure chart and the photos come out a bit to dark.I did read that the bw 10stop should be exposed for a 11 stop do you know if thats true? any imfo you could give would be much appreciated. This a a photo i took today with the filter.

@mitchell50 Mitch, yeah it takes some geting used to. I found the video to be a tad misleading when referring to exposure times. In the video, he has the shutter open for 2 minutes in bright daylight. I found in the brightest light, 45 seconds is about the max amount of time to keep it open without it being overexposed. I used trial and error to get the shots the way I want them. Hope this helps.
