Settings Advice

September 9th, 2012
I am attending a fundraiser concert tomorrow night and would be able to get a few good photos. It will be dark lighting with musicians and performers on stage - so movement shots possibly too.

Any advice on what my best settings would be etc.?

Thanks!

A flash would probably not do you much good, so take a fast lens (the one with your lowest f-stop number (a f/1.4 would be ideal, but your lens may only be able to open up to f/2.8), and shoot at a high enough ISO to get your shutter speed to at last 1/60 of a sec for handholding. 1/125 or higher would be even better. So, f/1.4 (or your lowest, most "open" setting), shutter speed of 1/125 (ideal) and ISO whatever it turns out to be given the first two settings. Just my suggestions, good luck!

@ktchpmn @grizzlysghost Good advice from Aaron. Watch out for the stage lights, and, if required, set positive exposure compensation to make sure you are not losing detail.

All good advice, consider higher ISO. Best to get shots early on while performers look their best. Try and have a listen to music before the show.
Watch the white balance.

I agree with Aaron. In that kind of situation I set shutter speed priority, set it at 1/60 or higher..especially if subjects are very animated, and then play with the ISO. Good luck! Have fun :-)
