Nikon D5000 vs Canon EOS Rebel T1i

September 4th, 2010
This topic has probably already done like a million times but I could use some opinions, feedback and personal experiences. Currently, I am using a Fujifilm S1500 but am looking to upgrade to a DSLR soon. I have always been preferential to Nikons and was going to get a D5000 til I found this Canon Rebel. Its the exact same price but has 15.1MP instead of the D5000's 12.3 (which is still better than my Fujifilm). Other than that, all the specs look about the same. So if you have one of these, or have used one in the past, I could really use your input. Do you have any pros or cons about your device?

Any information would be greatly appreciated, Thanks! :D

And, for those of you wondering, I will be starting my project tomorrow (Sunday). In the meantime, if you would like to see some of my previous work, you can check me out @ Facebook.com/KimCampbellPhotography.

Forgot to mention...in your opinion who makes better lenses? That will also be a deciding factor.

They're both neck and neck. I would suggest playing with both in a shop and seeing which you prefer.

Hold both in your hand and see which feels better, I have the D5000 and love ittt!

All the reviews I have read have had similar comments about them both, which makes this decision that much harder. My gut wants to go with the Nikon but the MP on the Canon keep calling my name.

I think you get more bang for your buck with Canon. :D

At that many megapixels I wouldn't worry too much about it. The megapixel race is almost over. The industry has acknowledged that the more pixels you have doesn't mean diddly-squat if the sensor isn't any bigger. And unless you're going to blow up your photos to the size of a 50" TV, you won't notice the difference between 12mp and 15mp. The megapixel war is a marketing myth!

I have a D5000 and love it, but have never used the canon so I can't give you a comparison :)

I use the D5000, too, and I am very, very happy with it. And I love Nikkor lenses .....

I have the T1i and love it, but I agree with Vikdaddy - the difference in megapixels is not anything to worry about. In fact, the more megapixels you squeeze in, the smaller they get which actually adds noise.
I think it should come down to which feels better to you and if you have access to one brand of lenses over the other. If you don't have any of your own - do you have a friend who shoots one or the other that might lend you glass on occasion?
If your gut says Nikon - go for it. Either way you can't go wrong.

The camera I have been using has been acting up a lot lately so it has to be sent in to get fixed. So today I had to buy a new one so I could continue my photography. I ended up going with the Nikon D5000 and so far I absolutely LOVE it!!
