online photo storage

September 7th, 2010
I've always just kept all my digital photos on my laptop and backup to a separate hard drive or disc.

We got broken into and they took the laptop and hard drive so I lost a stack of photos that I hadn't copied to disc.

My hubby uses photobucket to keep his pics on, so he didn't lose any.

What online sites do you guys recommend to store your pics (for your own use - not public)?

PS Might note that I want to be able to tag photos and search via tags, also share folders if I choose to.

I use Shutterfly. Mostly because I can send them on-line to Target and they are ready by the time I get there. I also like their books.

I use flickr for images I have modified, but I store my archival copies on Dropbox. This service syncs with both my computers so I have the most recent copy available whereever I am.

thanks Prairie Smoke: I had a look at it, don't think i can tag though (have just edited my first question to include that - sorry!)

You can tag photos in the photo viewer that comes built into windows, but I don't know if you can search by the tags. I think Picasa has a web storage facility too.

The problem I find is that a lot of them are limited until you pay an annual fee. Has anyone ever compared the price compared to the amount of storage space?

I use Smugmug, and love it. It's about $40 for a year, but you get unlimited storage, and you can download the original file size, etc.

I use Carbonite for online backup of all my files. Good for backup, but not organization.

shutterfly, flickr, picasa and photobucket are the ones I use...oh, and I guess you could say Facebook...for projects like this where it is one photo a day I use Blip photo and Fotolog - I also upload to the weather network but not for storage, thats for weather informaton reporting.

smugmug is a good option, and you can get the "vault" option to put TIFF, RAW, big files into as well.

I love snapfish because I use the "automatic uploader"- each time I plug my camera in, it uploads right away. This way, I won't put it off or forget, and my photos are backed up without work or effort on my part.
