I am pretty new and still have lots to learn. So please make your answer simple so I can understand it.
I see pics in bk and wt. with one item, like a red rose in color. I went to picknik and used the setting to put a circle around the item you want red, but the problem is, making that item clean. It always gets some background. Is this in a certain program or how do you do it? Thanks in advance for the help.
My P&S camera (Canon Sureshot SD1000) has a feature called "Selective Colour". Basically, you pick a colour you want to highlite (say red for example) and then only the things that are red in the shot will be red (ie: the rose). Everything else is black and white. Hope that helps !
When I get back on my PC I will send you some links to free software edit programs.. there is Gimp. photofiltre and a couple others I use.... they are free to download and have most of the applications that photoshop has, and you can do the black and white with a pop of color using these programs.....
I hightlight the area I want in b/w using the "magic lasso" and then either using the button for b/w or changing the hue and balance .... you can achieve the effect you want...
Easy--I use Picnik for all my photos. Make the photo into BW, then choose the paintbrush option and very carefully "colour out" the object you want to be in colour.
If you want the object to be another colour besides the colour it is--you can change that in the Tint or HSL Filter option (before you turn the photo into BW). Does that make sense? You have to be very careful when you "colour out" your object, I scroll in to magnify my image and then use my touchpad.
I use Picasa - selective B&W is the option, but you have to be careful not to get the background. The Photoshop version works much better. I wonder if maybe the PS Elements has the same? It's much less expensive that the regular Photoshop. Happy practicing! :)
Peggy, I use picnik too for almost all of my editing, and it is possible to do selective coloring, it just takes a little work. When you are in create tools, if you select "B&W" (I think it's the first option), when that expands you should see a small paint brush icon next to the fade bar. Click on that and another popout will open allowing you the freedom to color the parts of your photo you want highlighted. If this is confusing (i'm not the best at explaining), I'm pretty sure there is a tutorial video in the picknic "help" or "faq" sections.
You can do this in Lightroom too. If the object you want is the only thing of its colour in the image, you can drop all the colour channels to 0 saturation bar its one. If not (and even if so, you may still need to do this) there's then the modifier brush which you can lower/raise the saturation of any region of the image with, if you've a steady enough hand!
Peggy I followed Clarissas' instructions to achieve this effect in picnik and these are the results. This is the first time I have used this particular application so I'm rather proud of myself at the moment :)
Thankyou Clarissa :)
