Preview shoots from camera to ipad/laptop

September 4th, 2013
I am looking for recommendation on how to set my Nikon d7000 up to shoot a photo and it to be sent to my iPad or laptop automatically for review. I enjoy night photography but have run into the issue that it looks fine on the cameras little screen but once uploaded there is actually to much blur or noise. what is a good device that i could use to take a photo and have it sent automatically to my iPad for review while out in the "field". Looking for something easy to use and no cables that i have to hook to each device, and preferably not break the bank!
Thanks in advance for any suggestions and feedback!

@rcornish Rehanna, I'm not a Nikon user so haven't tried this. Here's an interesting thread on the topic. Sounds like it's possible, depending on the version of iPad you have.

If you have Lightroom on your laptop it is pretty easy to set up tethered capture. There are many you tube videos on how to set it up.

I've played a little with an Eye-Fi card, an SD to Type II CF Adapter card and my Canon, sending the low-res JPG to the iPad.

If you have an android tablet I would suggest the free app DSLR Dashboard https://code.google.com/p/dslrdashboard/ available in the Google Play store. Whilst I use it tethered to my Nikon D800 I understand there is a wireless option for the D7000.

There are some very interesting features built into the app including focus stacking, touch screen focussing, exposure bracketing in up 2.0ev between the shots and using sound as a shutter trigger

i have a canon and it came with software and a cable that lets me shoot tethered to my laptop... not only can i instantly review the results, but i can compose the shot on my laptop as well as adjust the settings and activate the shutter from it... not sure i would take it out to use for night photography, but it's pretty cool for set up macro shots...

@northy that does sound cool. @rcornish thanks for posting this. I'm interested to see what comes up and will look at the link above. I do know on a night time photo walk a guy had his iPad with him and talked about checking photos as he went along.

Thank you all for the comments and links! The wifi sd card seems like so far is going to be my best bet.. more research needed to determine. downside is the wifi pro which will transfer RAW files, needs an internet cable for the transfer where the WIFI mobi doesn't but it won't transfer RAW... LOL oh the photographer dilemma!!

@davidgnc Thank you so much for telling me about this! i have downloaded the app and cant wait to try it out on my phone this weekend! this was a way cheaper option then buying the WU-1B, as the extra little USB OTG cable only cost $5! Be great if they would make the app for the ipad as well!

i use the eye fi card and can highly recommend it.
since you've got a nikon D7000, you can buy 1 x eye fi card which you save small JPG to. You then have a bigger SD card (maybe 32GB) which you write RAW to.

You install an app on your android or ipad and that connects to the eye fi card. So as you shoot, the RAW will get written to your main card. The small jpg gets sent to your iPad / android. This is good for times when you're out and about - street / forrest etc since you can check exposure, light falloff across the image, hair (flyaways), outfits, etc

I've used this method for the past few shoots i've done and its awesome

@rcornish I actually use this method all the time now and it works perfectly. If you're still looking around for a solution, you may want to check it out :)

actually, I used it on my shoot on saturday so i could check light fall off between model and background and ensure that the umbrella didnt darken her face too much etc...
