Anyone have this problem with their card reader? + How do I get photos off a corrupted SD card

Just sent this to The Source, where I bought the reader. But their customer support page seems to have a broken link... d'oh!

So... rather than rewrite it... let me ask the collective smarts of 365 if anyone knows this problem and has an idea how to fix it. I REALLY don't want to lose any more photos from my trip!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nexxtech SD/Multi card Reader Model: 8000945 / ICES-003

I bought this card reader several weeks ago from a store in British Columbia while visiting my sister (I live in Toronto, Ontario). I was having problems with it immediately, but at first there seemed only to be a minor inconvenience, so I didn't return it to the store where I purchased it at the time. Now I am traveling and the issue has escalated to the point where I seem to have lost several dozen photos due to a corrupted SD card.

This is the problem:

While I was transferring photos from my SD card to my laptop (Mac pro, OX 10.6.8), the reader ejected itself accompanied with a warning message stating that the disk was "ejected improperly" (I can't remember the exact wording.) Initially this happened occasionally, but now it is happening all the time.

This behaviour happened the very first time I used the reader, but since it wasn't very often, I would simply plug it back in and continue the transfers. It was cumbersome, but I did manage to get a couple thousand photos off of my card successfully.

However today when I went to transfer photos, about half way through the process the reader started ejecting itself all the time - anytime I try to click on an image (I am trying to read a SanDisk 32gb SD card, though it was doing it with other cards as well).

And, now the SD card appears to be corrupted - it seems I have lost several dozen photos - they have been replaced with an alias that is unreadable. And when I look at the card in camera, every photo after a certain one appears to be gone... even though I am able to see some of them on my laptop. I am guessing this could be because of the repeated times that the "disk was not ejected properly."

What I want to know is:

Is this a known issue with the Nexxtech card reader?
What can I do to fix the problem?
Is there a way to recover lost data? (When I try to run a data recovery program, the reader ejects itself with the same error message.)

I am traveling in Europe for the next several weeks and can't return it to the store until later in April.

As you can imagine, I am concerned about my photos from this trip. I have already lost several dozen. I will use another card for now and try to recover those images when I get back to Canada, but I don't trust the reader to transfer any more of my photos until I know what the problem is.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated,
Thank you
Karyn Ellis

PS, if anyone can recommend a good card reader that would be great!

Get yourself another card reader and then try some recovery software (such as Recuva which is free from http://www.piriform.com/recuva/download ) and see if you can't recover some of your shots. Whatever you do, do not keep trying the dodgy card reader if it appears to be corrupting your cards.

My SD card broke, but I was able to recover all my pictures off of it using a free recovery program. Good luck.

As for card readers I use one that came with my sd card, it only reads sd cards and has never let me down, it's a Kingston one.

Some professional photo retailers will also recover your card as well.

I use a Tomato card reader and have never had any issues with it.

So sorry you've lost photos, that is horrid. :( I hope there were none amongst them that could not be recaptured.

Thanks for the suggestions,@steampowered @homeschoolmom @johnnyfrs @batavia @obmcreations !

Luckily I managed to transfer most of my photos before it all went awry ~ I seem to have only lost about twenty or so. And I will try to get those back through the recovery programs you mention.

But wow, now I am nervous though about losing more! Can't wait till I get a new reader!

I guess this sort of mishap happens to everyone at some point. But,... ugh!

It happens a lot...when I used to run a photo lab, we where always getting cards to recover. Thank goodness these programs do such a excellent job.

I lost all my pics when I transferred pics direct from camera to PC because the camera ran out of power midway through! Thankfully a photo shop was able to recover the pics (cost c$30. They also sold me a card reader to stop it happening again - unfortunately, that died 2 months later!

@batavia @net Glad to hear it's possible. I haven't had a chance to check it out further, but now that I'm back home I will look into it.

@mathilde22cat I have the same problem like yours a few months back. In the end, I found that it was the USB cable that was the culprit. The connection did not stay tight enough, and ended up disconnecting itself.

My card reader was the type that has a detachable USB cable, so it was easy for me to replace it. In your case, however, it hardly seems to be possible since the cable is fixed (you did not give a link for the product, so I googled it up and found something seems similar). So returning the product in exchange for another is a better solution, I think.

Just for your interest, I am using a MacBook, too, and I bought myself a SD to CF adapter, which allows me to use my SDHC and SDXC cards with my Canon 5D classic (it converts the SD cards to CF cards, just like the name says). That is more handy as MacBooks have SD card reader themselves, and more reliable. Also, SD cards are cheaper. Believe it or not, I am able to use my 64Gb SDXC card with my Canon 5D classic.
