Suggestions on a new camera?

November 11th, 2010
I've always been into photography but just started 365. After browsing some of the popular photos I have come to the conclusion that my photos are lame, lol. I was wondering if there were any good suggestions for a new (better) camera that will not cost me more than a few hundred.. I am especially interested in one with a good focus so I can fiddle with it, I like the very close up shots.

I don't have any suggestions for a new camera, but I just want to say that I think that a big part of a good picture is from the photographer and how he uses the camera, more than the camera itself. Someone who doesn't know how to use the settings on a camera won't take better pics with a better camera. Though of course, it's always fun to have a new toy :D

Most brands make great cameras. Just take yourself into a camera shot and ask to have a play with as many as you can. Don't buy the one they want to sell you, but instead choose the one that feels best in your hands.

For compact cameras, Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Sony, all make great gear, and a few other brands as well. I quite like the Panasonic Lumix, but there are as many opinions as there are cameras. Good luck!

I second what was said above... 90%+ of most shots is about the person taking it... until you run into limits such as dynamic range and such you don't need a new camera... as to great 'macro' shots with close focus... I find NOTHING beats the human eye... so you could shot some old lens with manual focus and still get stunning results...

BUT if you truly want to spend the money... try film... it has never been cheaper... i find people shoot slower and better with it... just my 2 cents...

I had a look at your photos Andrea and I assure you that they are not lame. I also agree with the above comments that most good photos are good due to composition and the photographer more than the camera itself.

If you are looking for a compact with auto and manual controls and a long zoom I recommend Panasonic Lumix. I love mine.

Thank you for the suggestions! My biggest frustration with my camera now is it does not do the 'macro' focusing well. I have an old school camera (w/ film), which I love but I also want to upgrade my digital one. Thanks again, I'll look into the suggestions :)

DSC-TX7, a great camera for beginners (like me)... easy to use and has a lots of modes to play with ... including macro. Have fun!

i firmly agree with the above comments, saying that you need to know how to use your camera before hand. you dont get amazing shots on automatic. (; But honestly, as sketchy as it may sound look on Craigslist. make sure you know how to use settings, because once you get into shooting with a DSLR camera, the settings are all changeable, and you will get a different outcome with each change.
I myself, have a Nikon d50 that i got off craigslist with 2 lenses for $350. also you may want to look at a d40 or a Canon eos rebel xs. All three are great starter cameras with lots of nice options

I love my Canon Powershot SX200is
Manual mode is awesome but it also takes great shots in the automatic modes!
