I know, probably the first thing you want to say is "google it!" ,but I would like some advice about it here,in this lovely community .... :)
So when should someone use lens hoods, and what kind? I have two,and the only (lame) reason I`m putting the longer one on,to protect the lens from the snow.I normally don`t use them.
Use it to avoid unwanted lens flare by preventing the light source shining directly onto the front element or filter. Basically, I use mine all the time, unless I actually want lens flare. It also serves a buffer against small knocks and bumps, further protecting the lens from impact damage and reducing the need to use a filter for that purpose. I use both, because I'm paranoid.
well i don't have one :(( and was even IN a camera shop today fgs, didn't even think of it, and i had been thinking of getting one lately lol. i was in there to see how much a macro lense was gonna cost me :((( too much for now :( but i would assume the hoods would be a fraction of that price haha
I use mine all the time (on the lenses that have them... my 50mm doesn't have one). Otherwise I'd probably be constantly sticking my hands/fingers all over the lens. And like @jinximages said, it does off protection against damage. I'm constantly banging my lenses (esp telephoto) into things, but usually it's just the hood that takes the blow. Hoods + filters = lifesavers of my lenses.
i feel it bumps colour and contrast for me... so mine is always on... unless I want muted pics and such... I don't use a filter with digital (film they are a must)... mainly because I am too lazy...
