I was thinking of experimenting with self portraits but I haven't got the slightest clue of how to get them to turn out nicely. I've tried a couple times but they were blah and didn't show anything about me.
Some tips would be nice :)
just keep snapping away - something interesting can happen when you're not quite in focus or not totally in the shot. But if you want a traditional selfie, use a tripod and pre-focus.
My tip would be to go on here and search for self portraits under the names self-portrait, portrait, selfie or anything like that. Tons of people do self portraits for their projects at times. I try to do one each week. I got ideas by looking at others and then making something my own from their ideas. Hope that helps! And yes, a remote would make a huge difference! I'd say it's a good investiment!
@allymk I think it's tons easier if you're close enough to the camera for it to reach, yes. But there are times when I have to run back and forth too!! lol
I have a remote and I think it helps. If you set the timer, you are going to be rushed more to get in front of the camera and set up how you want. With the remote, you can take all the time you want. And you can get one for under $20. And as long as you have a tripod, you are set. As for ideas, I would just search for self portraits, on here or google to get some suggestions.
as for inspiration, or ideas, this woman- Irene L- that I happened to find from google has inspired me beyond belief. I'd go so far as to say her work has helped me go in the direction with my art that I wanted to go. And there are several self portraits in here. http://www.fubiz.net/galleries/set/irene-l/
Also look up Kelly Webster, she's a huge inspiration for selfies, she just finished her 365 project so you've got a full years worth to look at. http://365project.org/landmeetswater/profile
Last thing I promise: I always use the tag selfportrait for my selfies....there's plenty on there for you to look at. 33 pages actually ;) http://365project.org/search?q=selfportrait
@ally - i would suggest a remote - you can often find one on ebay fairly cheaply, as well as a tripod. a thought to keep cost down, and make things easier to carry if you have a point and shoot - a mini tripod - they are usually 6 to 12 inches tall, and a lot easier to carry about. the downside is how much weight they can hold.
you might try something, and ask your friends to describe you in short words. an example, my friends would probably have all kinds of choice words for me but would probably answer coffee, fire, camera (and a few others). think of yourself in situations involving those words. for coffee, i might try setting a camera where it would focus on a cup of coffee with me in the background.
