How to learn Post Processing Techniques

January 5th, 2011
I am a new 365'er and just blown away by the beautiful work I see here. It is so inspiring! I was wondering if anyone knows of a place online where I can learn some of these gorgeous post processing techniques. I do have PS (3 I think) but am only sort of familiar with it.

Thanks!

Check out the videos and free actions at http://www.gettotallyrad.com and then do some YouTube searches for tutorials of what you'd like to learn (there are SO many good ones). Also check out the photography section at http://thepioneerwoman.com/photography/ for some great stuff (they also have some free actions, but more importantly, plenty of advice). That should get you started!

I've never used Photoshop actions when post-processing unless I'm making a small edit to a large number of pictures... for a beginner, it's probably better to learn what the main tools are (levels, curves, color balance, saturation, etc.) and then just play with them. I don't know of any good beginner pages for learning those, though, but you can always just take a picture you like and mess with the settings to see what they do.

There are plenty of books out there as well. Scott Kelby is the best there is and he has a great series of books for photoshop for digital photographers. The best part is, the books are geared towards photographers and not just photoshop in general so you're focusing on the techniques and features of the program that are most important and not learning every bell and whistle of the program (which can be a lifelong endeavor!)

I have the CS5 version of this book and it sits on my desk permanently as a reference, but if you have CS3 this would be the one for you:

Here`s something neat for the really lazy: http://www.rollip.com/ ,for a vintage look.

It`s kind of cool, but I`m starting to believe that all these "cheap tricks" I use are getting in my way of becoming better at photography/post-processing :-/ ...sometimes I have the "ah,doesn`t matter,I`ll crop it in Photoshop anyways"-mentality. I did not have a SOOTC photo on my project for weeks.. hmmm

@marubozo I second Jeremy's recommendation. Scott Kelby's books are both a great read and very useful.

If you're overwhelmed with full PS, think about picking up Photoshop Elements. It's a slimmed down version, but likely has all of the features you'll end up using.
